Learn to make a simple shells cowl with a step by step video walkthrough and written directions -free pattern, one skein project!

I picked up a ball of Berroco Folio yarn once a couple of years ago, just because it called to me. This yarn is soft and fuzzy and kinda fun, but I just didn’t know what to make with it! When I went hunting for a yarn for a shells cowl project, this just leapt out and demanded to be made. This cowl is a small project, using just one skein of Berroco Folio yarn (or similar), but you could easily adapt it to make a larger cowl, either in height or width, and you could use any yarn you’d like – make it your own! Supplies

Stitch Abbreviations

  • ch chain
  • st(s) stitch(es)
  • ss slip stitch
  • dc double crochet

Gauge/Sizing

In pattern, 9 rows is 4″ and 4.5 shells is 4″

This cowl is a one-size pattern. It is a small project, as it only uses 1 skein of yarn. Laid flat, it measures approximately 9.5″ wide and 7.5″ tall, but it does fit over my large adult (22.5″) head without trouble. If you’re looking for a wider or taller cowl, you will need a second ball of yarn. You can increase the width of the cowl by increasing the starting chain in multiples of 6 stitches. Increase the height by adding rows.

Thank you for the free pattern. I needed a quick Christmas gift and only had one 100g (147 yd) skein of Lion Brand Landscapes in Blue Lagoon. I extended mine a bit to 25 scallops so it will go around the neck twice. I hope the recipient loves it as much as I do.
