About Blue Star Crochet
Veronika Cromwell is the crochet fashion designer behind Blue Star Crochet Company. She was born in picturesque Slovakia but moved to the United Kingdom a few years ago where she lives with her husband, Darren, and sons, Jacob and Cole.
She was taught to crochet as a young girl by her mum, but it wasn’t until she was expecting her son when she found a real passion for designing and creating patterns for garments and accessories for the whole family.
The lack of cool and fun clothes for boys has led her to come up with her own designs. She set up Blue Star Crochet Company in December 2016.

Crochet Cowl Pattern by Blue Star Crochet Company
Winter is fast approaching, and I am diving into all the winter makes! My Elsa Cowl is a lovely winter accessory that would also make a lovely gift. Find the free crochet cowl pattern below.
I am fully embracing the upcoming season here in UK. However, winter is very different here. When I was a child, winters were full of white fluffy snow and huge icicles decorating the roof of our house in Slovakia. Crisp mornings were filled with blue skies and sunshine.
I am revisiting my childhood memories of winter with my Elsa Cowl. The colours I have chosen are to represent true winter feeling.
I used a combination of double zig zag crochet stitch to represent snowy mountains we often visited.
This free crochet cowl pattern will put your crochet skills to the test as it uses a wide range of crochet stiches from the humble single crochet all the way to the tall treble crochet. It will keep you on your toes but once you get the rhythm, you’ll be on your way to create your very own Elsa Crochet Cowl.
I have made this cowl in double height as I love the way it gathers up to create a modern crochet winter accessory. It works up fast as I used worsted weight yarn to keep you snug and warm through the winter.

MATERIALS
- Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran (100% acrylic; 184m per 100g ball; worsted weight), 1 ball each in Royal Blue-240 (yarn A), Stormy Grey-204 (yarn B), Washed Teal-232 (yarn C), Paper White-200 (yarn D)
- 5.5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
TENSION
- 13 sts x 11 rows in pattern repeat = 10 cm/4”
FINISHED SIZE
- Height 34 cm (13.5”) x 64 cm (25”) circumference
STITCHES USED
- beg- beginning
- BPdc- back post double crochet-Yo, insert hook from back around front to back of stitch in previous Round, yo and draw up a loop, [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below the abbreviations.
- ch- chain stitch
- dc- double crochet
- FPdc- front post double crochet-Yo, insert hook from front around back to front of stitch in previous Round, yo and draw up a loop, [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below the abbreviations.

- sc- single crochet

PATTERN
- With yarn A and 5.5 mm hook chain 84, sl st to first ch to join into round being careful not to twist the chain
- Rnd 1: 3 ch (counts as first dc), 1 dc in each ch around, sl st to top of beg 3 ch. 84 dc
- Rnd 2: 2 ch (doesn’t count as a st), 1 FPdc around beg 3 ch from prev rnd, 1 BPdc, (1 FPdc, 1 BPdc) repeat around, sl st to top of first FPdc. 84 sts
- Rnd 3: as Rnd 2. Fasten off, change to yarn B. 84 sts
- Rnd 4: 1 ch (doesn’t count as a st throughout the pattern), 1 sc in each st around, sl st to first st. 84 sc
- Rnd 5: 1 ch, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 3 tr in next st, 1 dc, 1 hdc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. Fasten off. Join yarn C in middle tr st of the 3 tr cluster. 112 sts
- Rnd 6: 1 ch, *3 sc in same st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc3tog, 1 sc in each of the next 2 st; repeat from * around, sl st to first sc. 112 st
- Rnd 7: 1 ch, 1 sc, *3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc3tog **, 1 sc in each of the next 2 st; repeat from * around ending last repeat at **, 1 sc in last st, sl st to first sc. Fasten off. Join yarn D in middle sc st of 3 sc cluster.112 st
- Rnd 8: 1 ch, 1 sc in same st, 1 hdc, 1 dc, * 1 tr3tog, 1 dc, 1 hdc **, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc; repeat from * around ending last repeat at **, sl st to first sc. 84 sts
- Rnd 9: 1 ch, 1 sc around, sl st to first sc. 84 sts
- Fasten off. Miss first 3 sts, join yarn A in next.
- Repeat Rnd 4-9 another 4 times changing colours every 2 rounds in yarn A, B, C, D order.
- Fasten off. Join yarn A in any st.
- Rnd 34: 3 ch (counts as first dc), 1 dc in each st around, sl st to top of beg 3 ch. 84 dc
- Rnd 34: 2 ch (doesn’t count as a st), 1 FPdc around beg 3 ch from prev rnd, 1 BPdc, (1 FPdc, 1 BPdc) repeat around, sl st to top of first FPdc. 84 sts
- Rnd 36: as Rnd 2. Fasten off. 84 sts
FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS
- Sew in all ends on the wrong side. Gently block to dimensions.
