About Straight Hooked

Malena Straight from Straight Hooked I taught herself to crochet in 2003 to make a blanket for her mother, and she has rarely put her hook down since. She crocheted well over a hundred blankets before realizing there was so much more you could do with crochet. After many years of encouragement from her husband, Malena launched her website in November of 2018 and began designing fashionable accessories for the modern trendsetter. She has had her biggest year of pattern releases in 2020, with 14 patterns published and still more to come. She loves creating gorgeous items using stitches that look complicated, but are easy to master. Malena’s goal is to write patterns that are easy to understand and fun to work up.

Secret Santa Hat

Santa Hat Crochet Pattern by Straight Hooked

Materials

  • DK (3) weight yarn in 3 colors (I used Paintbox Yarns Simply DK)
    • Color A (101 Pure Black) 100 yards
    • Color B (100 Paper White) 200 yards if using to make pompom, 100 yards if using pre-made pompom
    • Color C (113 Rose Red) 300 yards
  • 5.5mm crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Finishing needle
  • Pompom maker or white pompom
  • Scissors

Gauge

  • 10sc x10 rows blo = 2” (5 cm) square

Abbreviations

  • blo- back loop only Fiber Flux has a helpful tutorial for identifying the back loop here.
  • ch- chain
  • hdc-half double crochet
  • hdc2tog- half double crochet 2 together (decrease hdc) A helpful video tutorial for the hdc2tog is below.
  • If you can’t see the tutorial for the hdc2tog above, click HERE to watch the video on YouTube.
  • hdc3l- half double crochet in the third loop Avery Lane Creations has a great tutorial on hdc3l here.
  • R- Row
  • Rnd(s)- Round(s)
  • sc- single crochet
  • sc3l- single crochet in the third loop
  • sk- skip
  • slst- slip stitch
  • st- stitch
  • * Repeat instructions between asterisks as indicated

Notes

  • Make sure you do your gauge swatch!
  • For the reverse slip stitch, remove your hook from the loop, insert hook backward into the first st and pull your loop through, do not turn.
  • Make sure to place a stitch marker in your first st so you don’t drop stitches, and count, count, count!
  • The reason you slst into the next st on the odd rows is to keep your seam in the back. If you do not do this, your seam will be visible on the front of your hat as it grows in length.

Pattern Instructions
