Crochet Pattern: Sonic Waves Slouch Beanie

This is my second project for the 2020 Scarf and Hat of the Month Club with Oombawka Design Crochet and The Stitchin’ Mommy. It’s also the second of four crochet patterns I’m sharing that you can make with one pack of mini skeins! Sonic Waves is a crochet mini skein hat pattern in 3 sizes.

Like the Sonic Waves Cowl, the Sonic Waves Slouch Beanie is made using WeCrochet Brava yarn in Mini Packs. Each pack includes 24 mini skeins in different colors. I used 13 colors combined for Cowl and Beanie set.

For this particular crochet mini skein hat pattern, I knew I wanted to add a little bit of slouch. By increasing from the crown to a larger circumference but keeping the length short, I was able to get the right balance for me. If you want a slouchier version, keep crocheting the wave stitch pattern before decreasing to make your hat longer.

I designed the pattern in 3 sizes (infant, child, and teen/adult), each of which uses twelve mini skein colors in different combinations.

I actually designed the hat first and then Sonic Waves Cowl that was released last week. The hat has more emphasis on the lighter colors while the Cowl has more focus on the darker colors. Of course, in your own versions, you can switch around the order of the colors if you’d like.

I’m so excited to be joining my friends for the 2020 Scarf & Hat of the Month Club with The Stitchin’ Mommy and Oombawka Design Crochet. Click on the link to either of their sites to get all 36 free patterns!

Pattern Notes

  • The video below includes helpful tutorials for crocheting the dc, hdc, sc, sl st, and tr.
  • If you can’t see the video above, click here to watch it on YouTube.
  • Fiber Flux has a helpful tutorial for identifying the back loop here: https://youtu.be/VdOgClt8rj4.
  • Slouch Beanie is crocheted in the round in joined Rounds.
  • Change colors when joining Rounds with sl st. Colors A and C (and later K and L) are used throughout the pattern and should be carried along the inside of the hat when not in use. When picking up A, C, K, or L, be sure not to pull too tightly or hat will pucker. As other colors are fastened off, crochet over the yarn tails as you crochet. Fiber Flux has a helpful tutorial explaining how to do this here. For best results, point yarn tail ends towards inside of hat.
