Free Snowman Lovey Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

Crochet a comforting Snowman Lovey baby blankey for a special little one.

To make this extra snuggly, I have used fluffy chenille-style yarn, but it could be made using plain yarn as well.

My finished lovey measures approximately 16”/41cm in diameter, with the snowman attachment standing approximately 4”/10cm tall. The total folded length, from the top of the head to the edge of th blankey, is approximately 12”/31cm.

All crochet patterns from Hooked On Patterns are written using US crochet terms.

Gauge: Exact gauge is not too important. Just try to keep your stitches compact for the snowman section.

I have used a 6mm hook for the blankey (as recommended for the yarn) and a 5.5mm hook for the snowman and accessories.

What You’ll Need To Crochet Free Snowman lovies

I have used James C. Brett Flutterby Chunky yarn in White for the main blankey and snowman, and Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky acrylic yarn for the accessories, available from LoveCrafts.com.

Both of these yarn brands recommend using a 6mm hook for the yarns. If you are substituting the yarns, please ensure that they are all of a similar thickness by checking the recommended hook sizes.

To make snuggly lovies like mine, you will need Chunky weight (aka #5, US Bulky) chenille-style yarn in White (approx. 150yds), Chunky weight acrylic yarn in your chosen Main Colour (approx. 60yds) and Accent Colour (approx. 30yds), Plus a small amount of Black and Orange (less than 10yds each).

You will also need a 6mm & 5.5mm crochet hook, some toy stuffing, a stitch marker, 2 pins for marking the eyes, yarn needles – standard and large eyed, and scissors.

You could substitute the chenille-style yarn with plain yarn instead, if you don’t want the furry texture, or don’t have any available to you.

You can also use different weight yarn, eg. #4 Worsted or #3 DK, instead. Just make sure you keep to the same yarn weight for all the yarn colours. Use the hook size recommended for the yarn for the blankey and half a size smaller for the snowman and accessories. Please note that this will reduce the finished size of your lovey.

Crochet Snowman Free baby blankey

We’ll start with making the small star shaped blanket for the base of our Snowman Lovey, then work on the snowman’s arms, and then the snowman head, finishing of with the beanie hat and scarf.

We will be using a 6mm hook for the blanket section, and a 5.5mm hook for the Snowman pieces and accessories.

Crochet Star Shaped Blanket

Please note that the blankey will look too tight and buckled for the first few rounds. That’s fine, just continue working and it will soon fall into shape.

Embroider the Snowman’s Face

To keep the Lovey suitable for young children, I have embroidered the face instead of using plastic safety eyes or buttons.

Using Black yarn, embroider a couple of eyes and a smile on to the front of your Snowman head. The front of the head is the side with the thumbs of the mittens facing inwards.

Step 1.

Locate the 7th round down from the top of the head, and place 2 marker pins on this round, inline with the joins of the arms.

Free Snowman Lovey Crochet Pattern - Marking the eyes

Step 2.

Take a long length of Black yarn and thread up through the base of the neck, and out through the stitch gap above the Right marker. Make a stitch downwards, going in at the gap beneath the marker, removing the pin as you stitch. Repeat the stitch twice to make a 3 stranded embroidered eye.

Step 3.

Feed the yarn through the inside and come out above the Left marker, repeat the 3 stitches for the second eye.

Free Snowman Lovey Crochet Pattern - Embroider the eyes

Step 4.

Feed the yarn through the inside and come out 1 round down and 1 stitch left of the Left eye you’ve just made. Stitch 1 round down diagonally to the right, continue the diagonal action and come out 1 more round down, make a backstitch and come out 1 stitch to the right of the same last round. Make a backstitch and continue diagonally back up towards the right to finish off the smile.

Step 5.

Feed the yarn, through the inside, back out at the starting point at the base of the neck. Tie the ends together to secure, trim off excess yarn and tuck the knot inside the head.

Crocheted The Lovey Pom Pom

To keep the lovey as child friendly as possible, I have crocheted a chain loop pom pom, instead of using a traditional yarn pom pom which can lose stands of yarn.

Using your Accent Colour yarn and 5.5mm hook,

Step 1.

ch7, slip stitch into the back bump of the first chain, *ch6, sl st into the same first chain*, repeat between * 4 more times (You should have a total of 6 chain loops)

Crochet the Snowman’s Scarf

Work along the back bumps of the chain, starting from the 2nd chain from hook, hdc in each ch (40 hdc sts), cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in the ends of your Main Colour.

Keeping the Right Side of the stitches facing you, join your Accent Colour with a sc in the first st, sc in each remaining st (40 sc sts), cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends.

Joining your Snowman to your Lovey Blanket

Attach your Snowman to the blankey using the extra White chenille yarn tail we left earlier. Position your Snowman so that it is centred with 1 point of the star shape. Use a large eyed yarn needle to secure the base of the neck to the centre of the blankey.
