The crochet Star Stitch Scarf is finally here!
After quite some work both on my side and my testers’ side (thank you to each one of them!), I can finally share the last piece of my Star Stitch Winter Set (more on the set in a bit…).
This comfy scarf is very simple yet textured, squishy, and perfect for everyday use. The stitch combination is the same as for my Star Stitch Beanie and Star Stitch Fingerless Gloves. So, a few repeats of star stitch are followed by the main body, which is worked in the back loop only.
Crocheting in the back loop of the stitches is the quickest shortcut to a beautiful texture using simple stitches, such as double crochet and half double crochet!
About the Star Stitch…
Before going on to the pattern, there is one thing that I would like to mention about the star stitch used in this pattern.
If you are already familiar with the star stitch, you might be tempted to skip reading the pattern and start crocheting. However, please, take a minute to go over the instructions because this pattern uses a variation of the classical star stitch!
So, please, pay extra attention to the modification that I made. Everything is explained with step-by-step photos!

Star Stitch (Star)
Please, note that the star stitch used in this pattern is worked in a slightly different way than the regular star stitch. Follow the pattern step-by-step instructions to make sure you get it correct!
Size
This pattern is written for sizes toddler (1-3 years), Child S (4-5 years), Child M (6-10 years), Teen (11-15 years), Adult S, and Adult M.

- The instructions and stitch counts are either listed for each size or written as (Toddler, Child S, Child M, Teen, Adult S, Adult M).
Gauge
Alternating one row of BLO dc and one row of FLO dc: 13 dc for 6 rows in 4″ (10 cm).
If you notice that your double crochet section is much looser than the star stitch section, adjust your hook size accordingly. Either go up in hook size for the star stitch section or go down in size for the double crochet part!
Pattern Notes
- If the pattern says “dc 2”, it means that you have to crochet 1 dc into each of the next 2 sts.
- (…) – Repeat the instruction within brackets for the indicated times.
- The stitch count is indicated within brackets at the end of each row’s instructions.
Crochet Star Stitch Scarf – Free Pattern
Chain the following number of sts:
Toddler: ch 17.
Child S: ch 21.
Child M: ch 25.
Teen: ch 29.
Adult S and M: ch 33.
Row 1. Sc in the second ch from your hook and in each remaining ch. (16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 32 sts)
Row 2. Ch 1 (does NOT count as a st), turn. FLO sc across. (16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 32 sts)
Row 3
Step 1. Ch 3, turn. Insert your hook into the second ch from the hook, yo, and pick up a loop. Insert your hook into the next ch, yo, and pick up one more loop (3 loops on your hook).
Step 2. In the next st (the first st from Row 2), first, insert your hook into the BLO, yo, and pick up a loop. Then, insert your hook into both loops of the same st, yo, and pick up one more loop. (5 loops on your hook).
Step 3. Insert your hook into the next BLO, yo, and pick up a loop (6 loops on your hook). Yo, and pull through all 6 loops on your hook.
Step 4. Ch 1 to close your first star.
Step 5. Insert your hook into the eye of the star you just made, yo, and pick up a loop. Then, insert your hook into the leg of the star, yo, and pick up a loop (3 loops on your hook).
Step 6. Pick up a loop in the same BLO where you finished the previous star, pick up a loop in the BLO of the next 2 sts (6 loops on your hook). Yo, draw yarn through all 6 loops on your hook. Ch 1 to close the star.
Step 7. Repeat Steps 5-6 across. (8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 16 stars)
Step 8. Hdc 1 in the last st (the same where you finished your last star) by inserting your hook under both top loops of the st.
Row 4
Step 9. Ch 1, turn. Sc 1 in the hdc from the previous row, sc 1 in the eye of the first star. Sc 2 in the eye of each of the following stars until you have one star left.
Step 10. Sc 1 in the eye of the last star, sc 1 in the last st. (16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 32 sts)
Row 5-8. Repeat Rows 3-4 twice more.
Row 9. Ch-less dc (counts as your first st), BLO dc across. Crochet the last st into both top loops of th st for more stability. (16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 32 sts)
Row 10. Ch-less dc (counts as your first st), FLO dc across. Crochet the last st into both top loops of the st for more stability. (16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 32 sts)
Repeats
Repeat Rows 9-10 until:
Toddler: Row 66.
Child S: Row 78.
Child M: Row 84.
Teen: Row 88.
Adult S: Row 94.
Adult M: Row 102.
If you do not want to count rows, keep going until your work measures:
Toddler: ~41″ (104 cm).
Child S: ~49″ (124.5 cm).
Child M: ~55″ (140 cm).
Teen: ~57.5″ (147 cm).
Adult S: ~61.5″ (155 cm).
Adult M: ~67″ (170 cm).
Make sure to end with a row like Row 10, so that you can start the next row on the right side!
To make the pattern easier to follow for every size, here, I labeled rows with the letter of the alphabet. For example, Row A corresponds to row 67 for Toddler, 79 for Child S, 103 for Adult M, etc.
Row A-B. Repeat Rows 3-8 (Star Stitch).
Row C. Ch 1 (does NOT count as a st), turn. BLO sc across. (16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 32 sts)
Row D. Ch 1 (does NOT count as a st), turn. FLO sc across. (16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 32 sts)
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Finishing
Attach a fringe to each st of the first and last rows of your scarf.
Refer to the list below to cut lengths of yarn for your fringes.
Toddler: 6″ (15 cm).
Child S and M: 7″ (18 cm).
Teen: 8″ (20 cm).
Adult S and M: 9″ (23 cm)
To attach your fringe:
- Fold the length of yarn in half.
- With your hook, pull the center of the fringe through the bottom of the st going from the right to the wrong side of your work.
- Pass the ends of the fringe through the center that you just pulled.
- Tighten the fringe.
Although most people wouldn’t recommend it, I normally secure fringes with a knot, especially if the scarf is for a child.
Finally, you can trim and steam your fringes.
