Seaside Fingerless Gloves

The Seaside Fingerless Gloves are now available as a free crochet pattern! They’re sized for women’s small, medium, or large (though large is the same as men’s small, so there’s that…) All three sizes are available for free below. I’ve also included video tutorials for the spike stitch and how to create a thumb hole using foundation crochet stitches.

Supplies

  • Worsted yarn in 4 colors, up to 30g/60y per color. I used Vidalana Worsted from Knitcrate (you can use more or fewer colors as you choose, just rotate through your colors every time a color change is indicated!)
  • Size H crochet hook – I love these Odyssey hooks from Furls Crochet!
  • Yarn/Tapestry Needle

Stitch Abbreviations

  • ch chain
  • st(s) stitch(es)
  • sk skip
  • ss slip stitch
  • fhdc foundation half double crochet
  • hdc half double crochet
  • dc double crochet
  • spk spike stitch
  • dec decrease 3 together (see special stitches)

Gauge/Sizing

In pattern (alternating spike stitch rows and hdc rows), unstretched, 7 stitches and 6 rows = 2 inches.

For sizing purposes, measurement is taken around the four finger knuckles.

  • Women’s small: approx 7”
  • Women’s medium: approx 7.5”
  • Women’s large: approx 8”

Finished length is approximately 8.5”

Pattern Notes

These gloves are worked “top down” starting at the finger opening and working toward the cuff. This is opposite how I normally construct gloves, but I really liked having the spikes pointing up toward the fingers!

Variation: You can use as many different colors of yarn as you’d like (but I recommend at least 2 to show off the spike stitches). The instructions are written with four colors in mind, but if you choose a different number of colors, you would just rotate through your colors in order whenever there is a color change.

Optional: These gloves come pretty high up on the fingers. You can omit rows 8&9 to have slightly shorter gloves, just make sure you adjust the color changes accordingly.

Special Stitches

I’ve included links to YouTube video tutorials showing the spike stitch and how to create a thumb hole using foundation crochet stitches.

Spike stitch: https://youtu.be/co64pjyJnGg

Thumb hole (also shown below): https://youtu.be/OPUYWXNA_ak

Foundation Crochet Stitches: https://youtu.be/44mjihi7YvI

Spike Stitch: Work as for a normal hdc, except instead of inserting your hook into the next stitch as normal, you’ll insert your hook in the stitch on the row below and pull up a loop.

dec: To work the decreases, you’ll work three stitches together – a spike stitch and 2 dc’s (we use dc’s in the decrease instead of hdc’s just because it works better). To do this, work the first dc until the last step, but do not finish, work a spike st in the next stitch until the last step, but do not finish, and work another dc in the third stitch until the last step. Finish the stitch by doing a yo and pulling through all loops on your hook. These stitches only appear in row 14, where they should happen below the thumb hole created in row 10.
