A Simple Crochet Top Pattern That’s Perfect for the Summer Time
Summertime makes me so happy! Sun-kissed skin, breezy days on the beach, and lots of sunset watching with family and friends. So with that being said, my latest free crochet pattern is inspired by the beach.
I really wanted to make something that was fast, simple, and sleeveless. Something that you could throw on quickly when heading out to watch the sunset and something that you could throw on after a long day at the beach.
I just love how this crochet top turned out because the construction is just so simple. All you have to do is crochet two squares, whip stitch the sides together, and make 4 I-cord straps, that’s it! It’s a super simple crochet top pattern that can be made in a day.
My sister loved this top so much, that she wanted one too! So I made one for her as well and filmed the whole thing. So there’s a step-by-step video tutorial included with this pattern.
A Knit-Like Crochet Top
I’m a sucker for knit-like crochet stitches and often try to incorporate crochet stitches that look knitted in my patterns. So when it came time to pick out the stitches for this top, one thought came to mind, the granite stitch.
The granite stitch is a simple woven knit-like stitch that’s made using only chains and single crochets. The tiny little “v’s” in the pattern are made by making single crochets in each chain space.
Looks a lot like knitting right? Except it’s totally made using a hook.
Lightweight Yarn That’s Perfect for Hot Weather Days!
This crochet top pattern is made using one of my favorite summer yarns, which is Lion Brand Coboo Yarn. It’s a lightweight number 3 yarn that’s made from a cotton bamboo blend. It’s a great yarn to work with as it drapes beautifully and has a nice little sheen to it.
I made my top in the color beige and I made my sister’s in this beautiful mauve pinky color. I honestly love all the colors in this yarn line (17 total), so it was hard for me to pick one. But let me know in the comments what color you plan on making your top in.

This sleeveless crochet top is perfect for the beach, hanging out by the pool, or going out with family and friends. Pair it with a skirt or your favorite pair of jeans.
Materials:
- Lion Brand Coboo Yarn in the color Beige (Weight 3/light, 3.5 oz, 232 yards/212m) or another lightweight number 3 yarn. Sizes: XS – 2 balls, S – 3 balls, M – 3 balls, L – 4 balls, and XL – 4 balls.
- Size 4.5 mm crochet hook for the front and back panel.
- Size 3.5 mm crochet hook for the I-cords/straps.
- 4 Stitch markers.
- Darning needle.
- Scissors.
Finished Sizes:
XS (S, M, L ,XL)
Bust: 28 (32,36,40,44)” inches.
Top Length: 11 (12,13,14,15)” inches.

Abbreviations:
ch – chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook.
ss – slip stitch: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
sc – single crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
1-ch sp – 1 chain space
Pattern Notes:
- Pattern written in U.S Terms.
- ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Top is shown in size M, model is 5’9″ tall and bust measures 36″ inches.
- Top is true to size. If you prefer a more loose fit, size up one size.

- Top is worked by making two panels (front and back), which are then sewn together at the side using the whipstitch method. I-cords (4) are made separately and then sewn on both sides of the top.
Pattern
Front and Back Panel
- Make 2 panels using a 4.5 mm crochet hook.
ch 70 (80, 90, 100, 110)
Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, *1 ch, skip 1 ch, 1 sc in next ch; rep from * to end, turn. 69, (79, 89, 99, 109).
Row 2: ch 1, 1 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next 1-ch sp, *ch 1, 1 sc in next 1-ch sp; rep from * to last sc, 1 sc in last sc, turn.
Row 3: ch 1, 1 sc in first sc, *ch 1, 1 sc in next 1-ch sp; rep from * to last 2 sc, ch 1, skip 1 sc, 1 sc in last sc, turn.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until panel measures 11(12, 13, 14, 15)” or you’ve completed 55(60, 65, 70, 75) rows.
Final row 56(61, 66, 71, 76), ch 1, ss in first stitch and across.
Finish off and work in ends.
I-Cords
- Make 4 I-cords using a 3.5 mm crochet hook.
For the straps you will be making 4 I-cords using a 3.5 mm crochet hook. 2 I-cords will go on the front and 2 will go on the back. Make sure to leave a long tail-end. The tail-end of the I-cord will be used to sew on the top.
How to make an I-cord: Chain 3, insert hook into 2nd chain, yarn over and pull through loop. Insert hook into 3rd chain, yarn over and pull through loop. Carefully take hook out of first two chains, holding two loops with fingers in left hand, yarn over and pull through first loop. Insert hook back in second loop, yarn over and pull through loop. Insert hook back in third loop, yarn over and pull through loop. Continue to repeat this process until you’ve reached your size’s length or until your desired length.
For sizes XS and S:
Crochet 4 I-cords that measure 18″ inches long.
For sizes M, L, and XL:
Crochet 4 I-cords that measure 20″ inches long.
Assembly: Seaming the Panels Together
Step 1: Grab your back panel and lay it down on a flat surface, then grab your front panel and lay it on top of the back panel. Make sure that both panels are perfectly aligned on top of each other.
Step 2: Using the whip stitch method or any other method you prefer, seam the sides together until 1/2″ inch from the bottom. This will create a small opening at the end of the panel. You can also seam it completely closed.
Step 3: Once both sides have been seamed together, grab your measuring tape and starting from the top right front panel measure 3 inches to the left (8 single crochet stitches) and place your stitch marker.
Repeat this step for the left side and the back right and front sides.
Once you have placed your stitch marker on all sides, put your top on and see if you like where the stitch markers are placed (this is where the I-cords will be sewn on). If you find that you need to adjust them, then move the stitch marker by 1/2″ inch.
Once you have the right placement of your stitch markers, grab your I-cord and sew it on where the stitch marker is placed. You want to make sure that the I-cords are secured on tightly, as this will be holding up the straps (refer to video tutorial if you need help on this part).
Finally, weave in any ends and you’re finished!
