Crochet Quilter’s Dish Scrubby

My mom is a quilter. My aunt is a quilter. I have wonderful quilts from my ancestors I have never met. Yet, I am not a quilter.

I can sew, and have made some of my own clothes. However, I do not quilt. The meticulous amount of measuring and making sure everything is square does not come across as relaxing to me, and if it brings more stress into my life I try to avoid it if at all possible. How crochet and knitting is less stressful I’m not sure. Perhaps I learned when things were calmer in my life, and now the “stressful” bits I just know how to get through better.

Any way, a few months ago I was with my mom looking at her quilt blanket patterns. She was trying to determine which pattern she had used previously as a baby blanket for our oldest daughter. She wanted to remake it in a larger size since it has been outgrown.

As she was going through everything I enjoyed looking at the construction of the patterns. The formation of the blocks to create images has always intrigued me. Something with how art and math intersect fascinates me.

So, as I was thinking of a new scrubby to welcome spring these quilt blocks came into my mind. I may not be able to quilt with fabric, but I can quilt with yarn.

Thinking of how quilters use different materials to create motifs of color that are pieced together and repeated, I took yarn and created a similar visual of those quilted shapes. This scrubby consists of four square motifs that are joined together, and then crocheted around all of them to finish the scrubby off. Between the four crochet squares I alternated which yarn I started first in half of the motifs. This gives many different pattern options when it comes to joining the four of them. Just like quilting, this enables a lot of creativity in what overall pattern you want your crocheted scrubby to be.

I found this scrubby fun to make, and I really enjoyed playing with the possibilities it created. I hope you enjoy it and have as much fun as I did.

Yarn 1: Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie Yarn – 1 skein (get it here)

Crochet Hook – I (5.5mm)

Needle

Finished scrubby dimension = 5 ¾” x 5 ¾”

Gauge: 4” x 4” = 16 sc x 16 rows

Square Motif:

With yarn 1 Ch2.

Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook (sc, dc, sc).

Row 2: Ch 1 turn. Sc in first sc of previous row. In the dc of the previous row (sc, dc, sc). Sc in last stitch.

Row 3: Ch 1 turn. Sc in each of the sc of the previous row. In the dc of the previous row (sc, dc, sc). Sc in each of the remaining sc stitches of the previous row.

Repeat Row 3 four more times, changing to yarn 2 on last sc pull through.

With yarn 2 repeat Row 3 three more times.

Bind off and weave in ends.
