The Seaglass Bag

Hi Folks!

I am so excited to share with you today a gorgeous crochet beach bag pattern designed by my latest guest designer, Vicki Roberts of Off the Hook for You!

I have always considered myself a “mountain girl” – even though I am not from the mountains. 😂

And, after living in the Idaho-Montana mountains for the last year, I have found that I do indeed love the mountains!

However, I also often found myself traveling over an hour to the next biggest town, which was on a huge lake, just to go to the beach.

Could it be that I love the beach almost as much as the mountains? I think so!

And you know what I always brought with me? A beach bag of course!

And my oh my, does Off the Hook for You have a great beach bag pattern to share with you!

Let’s let her introduce herself and give you all the fabulous details!

Hello,

I’m so happy to be sharing my newest crochet design with you today on RaeLynn’s blog – Itchin’ For Some Stitchin’.

After the year we’ve had, I’m dreaming of a sandy beach with calm blue water, and some sunshine – so I can take my new crochet beach bag with me!

I’ve just started trying my hand at garment design too as you really can’t beat a handmade cardigan or 10!

My love of anything stripey has transferred to some of these designs too – you can’t beat a stripe (or 20!).

But I love a crochet bag, I always think you can’t have enough of them, whether it be a market tote, to an evening purse, to an overnight crochet bag (yes I’ve designed one of them too for Simply Crochet Magazine), you really cannot have enough crochet bags ever!

So for this design, I grabbed some cotton yarn, and set to making a lovely blue sea inspired bag, made in one size, but it being crochet you know it’s going to stretch to be able to carry a towel, a good book and a water bottle with ease, so you can spend the perfect day at the beach or pool.

Yarn Choice for a Crochet Beach Bag

The yarn for this bag, or most bags I find is key.  I wanted a high quality worsted weight 100% cotton for the slightly thicker stitch.  Lily Sugar n Cream Solids was the winner, as it came in 35 different colour shades, including 10 different blues meaning I could pick my “sea” colours perfectly.

I chose Seabreeze, Bright Navy and Beach Glass – obviously I was already dreaming of the beach just by the names!

The bag was designed to use just one skein/ball of each colour.  I hate having tiny bits of yarn leftover at the end of a project, and try hard to make all of my crochet patterns not do this, and this bag is no exception.

Perfect Beach Crochet Project

This crochet beach bag is a perfect crochet project for the summer months.  It uses a cotton yarn, so no squeaky/ sweaty fingers here, and it also uses only 3 skeins/balls of yarn meaning it easy to take on a roadtrip – you could even make it on your way to the beach!

Not only is this bag a perfect beach bag, it’s a perfect bag to crochet at the beach!

Skills needed for the Seaglass Crochet Beach Bag

Here’s the thing – this beach bag is a lot simpler than it looks – Yay!

I’d call this an advanced beginner project.

It uses the standard US Double crochet, but adds that little bit of skill with working in the round, Single crochets and V-Stitches (which are easier than they look!)

The bag is made by working in the round and using the amigurumi method to begin with, so you need to know how to make a magic ring.

Then to get a nice tight base to the bag – it starts with US Single crochet, before changing to Double crochets.

The V-stitches are great, as they add a lot of height – making the bag quicker to make but are holey – so aren’t yarn eaters, and also give the bag a different look to make it stand out.

The V-stitch is super easy – and a great way to expand your crochet knowledge. They work on the same premise as the US double crochet – but before you “finish” the stitch, you start making the next one – then finish the 2 together!

So on with the crochet pattern for the Sea Glass Beach Bag.

About the Designer:

I’m Vicki Roberts – crochet pattern designer, crochet teacher and busy mum and I want to make crochet easier for everyone.  I’ve been blogging for about 6 years as “Off the Hook for you”, a blog about crochet and my makes!  At the start. I just wrote about crochet as and when they came into my mind or after being prompted by the little people in my life saying “mummy can you make me…..”.  Since then, I’ve developed into designing and sharing patterns for pretty much anything – garments, hats, blankets to name a few.

I first picked up a hook about 7 years ago, and my learning curve was steep!  From struggling with crocheting a flower hair clip for my daughter which took 6 hours (we’ve all been there), to getting my first design published in a magazine a couple of years later, it’s been a blast.

My first magazine published design was in 2018 and I’m now featured in multiple issues of Simply Crochet and Crochet Now.

When not sat with a hook in my hand (which isn’t very often), I spend a lot of the time playing taxi service to ice hockey matches and training for my two little people!   I live in the UK, in the world’s first Garden city, with my husband, 2 kids, 2 lurchers, 2 guinea pigs and 6 chickens.

Folks, this beach bag is to die for! Absolutely the perfect summer accessory, especially if you are an avid beach goer like I am!

Even if you’re not, it’s still a great addition to your everyday summer wardrobe!
