Modern Chunky Crochet Coasters

One of my all-time favorite crochet stitches is the granite stitch. It’s such a pretty simple stitch and works for a variety of different crochet projects. It’s also a very textured stitch when using a bulky yarn.

As I was making swatches with different types of yarn, I realized that this stitch would work great for a coaster. It’s a pretty dense stitch and when using the right yarn it creates the right thickness for a coaster.

This pattern would also work great as a hot pad or potholder. You could make a whole set for your home!

Crochet coasters for every table in the house

I love crocheting coasters and pretty much have them in every room. I’ve been known to have several cups of water randomly placed everywhere in our home. It drives my hubby crazy, especially when it leaves a rim mark.

So coasters are a must in my home. Anyhow, this chunky crochet coaster pattern can be made in one color or several different colors. If you’re choosing to work with more than one color, all you need to do is alternate rows.

This modern crochet coaster pattern is very easy and works up quickly so you don’t need a lot of yarn. It’s a great crochet stash buster project!

Textured coasters make the perfect house-warming gift!

One of my friends recently purchased a new home and I plan on sending her a set of these crochet textured coasters as a house-warming gift! Everyone could use a set of coasters. So I think this easy pattern would be the perfect thing to make for her.

Plus, homemade gifts are the best. What are some things that you have made for family and friends?

Easy Construction + Simple Stitches

The base of this pattern is very simple as you’re just crocheting a mini rectangle in the granite stitch. The granite stitch is a very simple stitch to learn, all you need to know is chain and single crochet.

Check this post out here if you need a refresher on this stitch (step-by-step video tutorial included).

After the base of the pattern is made, all that’s left to do is create a loop. Once the loop is made, all you need to do is cut an additional piece of yarn and wrap it around the loop. It’s that simple!

Yarn Choice

I choose to work with Ganxxet Double-Thick Cotton Air yarn. It’s a bulky cotton yarn that comes in a variety of different colors. My favorite colors in this yarn line are cherry blossom, charcoal, beige, and natural.

If you decide to go with another bulky yarn or can’t find bulky cotton yarn, you can always hold two worsted weight cotton yarns together and use that for the pattern. Want a marled effect, choose two different colored yarns!

I highly recommend using cotton yarn for these crochet coasters as you will be putting something hot on it. For example, acrylic yarn can actually melt when something hot is put on it. So I always recommend going with natural fiber for any crochet kitchen projects.

Plus, cotton yarn performs better if you spill something on it. Easier clean-up!

I too have used your pattern to make many using 3 strands of Dishie cotton (worsted weight). Now I would like to start using a braided cotton cord, but have a question. Did one 55-yard skein of 3-MM cord (braided cotton air) give you 6 coasters?

Hi there, that's great. So one ball (55 yards) will give you 2 and 1/2 coasters. 😊
