The finished coin purse or pouch measures approximately 2.5” high by 3” wide, with an opening of 2” in diameter.

How To Crochet A Kiss Lock Rainbow Coin Purse or Drawstring Pouch

I have designed this coin purse to fit a mini keyring 2″ kiss lock clasp frame, which I purchased from Amazon.

But don’t worry if you don’t have, or can’t get hold of, the kiss lock frames. You can make the rainbow drawstring pouches instead, with just some extra White yarn.

What You’ll Need to Make The Rainbow Purse

I have used Drops Paris and Rico Essential Cotton Aran/Worsted weight yarn, with a 4.5mm hook.

You can use any Aran/Worsted weight yarn, but I would recommend using cotton for sturdiness and durability

You’ll only need a small amount (less than 20yds) of each of the following colours:
Sky Blue, Pink, Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red. If you’re making the drawstring pouch option, you will also need White yarn.

For the kiss lock coin purse version, you will need a keyring 2″(5cm) kiss lock clasp frame, some glue, and a sewing needle and thread.

Optional extras for the drawstring pouch include a length of ribbon or cord, and a spring loaded toggle. But these are not necessary, as you can just use White yarn to make a twisted cord (explained in the pattern) and tie your drawstring in a bow.

You will also need a 4.5mm crochet hook, a stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors.

Pattern Notes for making the Rainbow Purse or Pouch

Gauge:
Gauge is not too important. Just keep your stitches compact to avoid large gaps in your finished purse.

Invisible Join:
To fasten off each colour, we will be using the invisible join technique – After working the last stitch, cut yarn leaving a yarn tail of at least a couple of inches, pull the tail up through the middle of the last stitch, use your yarn needle to thread the end through the second stitch along and back through the middle of the last stitch.

Pull to create a faux stitch top over the first stitch. Thread the tail up through the back loop of the real first stitch to hook onto the stitch and then weave in your end to secure.

Joining with a Single Crochet:
For each new colour, join yarn with a single crochet – Start with a slip knot on hook, insert hook into the joining stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook to complete the sc joining stitch. This counts as the first sc stitch of the round, to start the round with an increase stitch, make another sc in the same stitch as you joined in to.

Working in continuous rounds:
When working with Sky Blue yarn, we will be working in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your first stitch.

Scattering your joining points:
For best results, scatter where you join the next colour so that the increases are not directly above each other. This will give a rounder finish.

Crochet Stitches & Terms Used For the Rainbow Purse

This pattern is written using US crochet terms. Please refer to my Crochet Terms Conversion Chart for help with translating into UK terms.

(mr) Magic Ring, (ch) Chain, (ch sp) Chain Space, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (inc) Increase – 2 sc in the same place, (dec) Decrease (Invisible) – hook through the front loops only of the next 2 stitches and make a sc, (dc) Double Crochet, (BLO) Back Loops Only.

Numbers shown in ( ) at the end of each row/round indicates the number of stitches you should have at the end of that row/round.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x. For example; {sc, inc,} would mean sc into next st, increase (2sc) in next st. Or {sc x3, inc,} would mean sc each into the next 3 stitches, increase in the next st. Numbers in front of stitches indicate the number of stitches worked into the same stitch, eg. 5dc would mean work dc 5 times in the next stitch.

Crocheting the Main Purse

Start with a Magic Ring using Sky Blue yarn,

R1.

6sc into mr, pull closed (6)

R2.

inc x6, fasten off with an invisible join (12)

R3.

Using Pink yarn, *inc, sc,* repeat between * to the end of round, fasten off Pink with an invisible join (18)

R4.

Using Purple yarn, *inc, sc x2,* repeat between * to the end of round, fasten off Purple with an invisible join (24)

R5.

Using Blue yarn, *inc, sc x3,* repeat between * to the end of round, fasten off Blue with an invisible join (30)

R6.

Using Green yarn, *inc, sc x4,* repeat between * to the end of round, fasten off Green with an invisible join (36)

R7.

Using Yellow yarn, *inc, sc x5,* repeat between * to the end of round, fasten off Yellow with an invisible join (42)

R8.

Using Orange yarn, sc in each st, fasten off Orange with an invisible join (42)

R9.

Using Red yarn, sc in each st, fasten off Red with an invisible join (42)

R10.-R12.

Using Sky Blue yarn, sc in each st (42 for 3 rounds)

Tip: My finished purse measures approximately 2.5” deep. If you would like a deeper purse, you can add more rounds here before continuing to finish the pattern. As a size guide, 5 rounds = 1”.

R13.

*sc x5, dec,* repeat between * to the end of round (36)

R14.

sc in each st (36)

R15.

*sc x4, dec,* repeat between * to the end of round (30)

R16.

sc in each st (30)

R17.

sc in each st, sl st into the next first st to level off, fasten off Sky Blue with an invisible join (30)

Kiss Lock Coin Purse Option

I have designed this purse to fit a mini keyring 2”(5cm) kiss clasp frame. These come with the keyring attachment already on the kiss frame. I purchased mine from Amazon, simply search for “keyring kiss clasp lock frame” and you should find lots to choose from, sold in various quantities.

Attaching your Crochet Purse to the Kiss Clasp Frame

Start by placing the kiss frame around the top of your purse with the holes of the frame facing down. Apply a little glue under the rim of the frame, and tuck the top edge into the frame. I have used UHU All Purpose Adhesive glue, but any similar glue will do. You may find it easier to glue one side at a time. Allow the glue to dry, and then reinforce the join by sewing along the holes with a sewing needle and thread. I have doubled up my cotton thread, before threading it through the needle, so that my thread has 4 strands for added strength. You could use stronger polyester thread, or Nylon fishing/jewellery thread instead

Drawstring Pouch Option

If you prefer, you could turn this Rainbow Purse into a drawstring pouch instead. I have added a White decorative shell edging to add a cloud effect to compliment the rainbow design.

Crocheting the Cloud Effect Drawstring Closure

For this section, we will be working in joined rounds. The beginning ch1s do not count as stitches, start working each round from the first st directly below your ch1.

Use White yarn in the same yarn weight you have used for the main purse,

R1.

Join with a sc to any stitch, sc in each remaining stitch, sl st into the first sc to join (30)

R2.

ch1, sc in the same stitch below, ch1, sk1, *sc, ch1, sk1,* repeat between * to the end of round, sl st into the first sc to join (30)

R3.

ch1, sc in each sc and ch1 sp, sl st into the first sc to join (30)

R4.

Turn to work in the opposite direction and work this round in the Back Loops Only. ch1, *sc BLO, sk2, 6dc BLO, sk2,* repeat between * to the end of round, sl st into the first sc st to  join, fasten off and weave in ends.

Making & Inserting your Drawstring Cord

You can use any type of cord or ribbon you prefer for your drawstring cord. I have made a twisted cord out of the same White cotton yarn I used for the cloud closure. To make this, simply take a 27” strand of yarn, hold one end and roll the other end to twist it in the same direction and the natural ply twist. I find it easier to roll it on my lap, holding it at the top of my thigh, rolling down towards my knee, pinching it and bringing it back up my thigh to continue rolling. Roll it around 5 times until it’s nice and tight. When you bring the 2 ends together, the yarn will kink and twist around itself. Knot the ends together to hold the twist.

Thread your cord, in and out, through the eyelets made during R2. of the cloud closure section, using the folded end. You can use your hook to help you pull it through. Once threaded, tie a knot on this folded end as well, cut at the fold, and trim to mirror the other end. You can simply tie your cord in a bow, or you can use a spring loaded toggle, to operate your drawstring.
