The Walcot Beanie is a fabulously quick and textured chunky crochet hat pattern to suit everyone this winter season.

I have never been much of a fan of crochet hats so after years of avoiding making them I’ve finally decided that I should just design ones that I would like to wear and that might solve it!

This seamless crochet hat has a top-down construction using two colours but only one colour per round so no yarn switching and tangling! There are hardly any ends to weave in and it comes in sizes from preemie crochet hat to large adult.

There is also a step by step video tutorial for the whole thing, so if you’re new to round construction hats, post stitches or would just like to work along with me then give it a watch!

You can carry on reading to find the free pattern here in this blogpost or purchase an ad-free, printable PDF version of the chunky crochet hat pattern in my stores to download and print.

About the Chunky Crochet Hat Pattern

I wanted to design a seamless crochet hat that was easy to crochet, quick to crochet and above all fun to crochet!

I love designing patterns that look more complex than they actually are. For example, my Criss Cross Blanket is actually made up of just solid granny squares and my Hawthorne Tee is just two rectangles with some rounds attached to the bottom.

The colour work on this chunky beanie might look like you’ll get in knots, but the crochet post stitches mean you actually only use one colour per round making it super easy to keep track of where you are.

The pattern is an intermediate level but there are only a few increase rounds that you need to learn and I’d encourage you to look through the video tutorial if you’re a beginner to see exactly where the stitches go to create the ribbed look.

Other Crochet Hat Patterns To Try

I have a huge range of crochet accessory patterns on the site but here are a few hats in particular that you might also like (if hats are your thing!).

Most of them are only designed for little people but just wait! I have lots more coming soon!

Yarn

To make the chunky hat I used Brava Worsted Weight yarn from WeCrochet.

It’s a really fun yarn to work with that has the most awesome speckled colour range too! It’s 100% premium acrylic and 218yds/100g.

The colours I chose to use together were:

Option 1: Cake Pop Speckle and Cornflower

Option 2: Salt and Pepper Speckle and Silver

1 ball of each colour is enough to make one larger size or two smaller size hats.

I alternated colours and made 4 hats with just 4 balls of yarn so these are great for cost effective craft fair products too!

A great alternative yarn if you wanted to use wool is Swish Worsted by WeCrochet which is 100% Superwash Merino wool 110yds/50g and creates a beautiful fabric.

Another option, if you want a mix of acrylic and wool is Wool Ease by Lion Brand Yarns which is a dream to work with too! It’s 80% acrylic, 20% wool and 180m/85g.

Crochet Pattern and Construction Notes

The hat is worked in one piece from the top down.

It is easy to adapt to add more rounds to the crown in multiples of 2 and any number of body repeats to make it exactly the size you’d like.

The cuff is worked in rows and joined directly to the hat after the body.

A ch1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.

Change colour after every round when working the ss join. Insert hook into first st to join the round, drop old colour, work yarn over with new colour and pull it through to complete the ss.

You don’t need to break the yarn after changing, just carry it on the inside of the hat making sure to keep the slip stitches to join the rounds tight to hide them.

Video Tutorial

I’ve made a full video tutorial to walk you through all of the steps to make this pattern:
