Mountain Ash Shawl

Difficulty level: *** Intermediate

Free Shawl Crochet Pattern

I called this the Mountain Ash shawl, because the lace around the fringe reminded me of clusters of Mountain Ash berries. It’s a pretty easy shawl to crochet for anyone with a little crochet experience.

Skills Required/Techniques Used:
- Basic crochet stitches: chain (ch), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc),
- Advanced crochet stitch: treble crochet (tr).

Size: width 66” (165 cm), depth 38” (95 cm)

Materials: Fiesta Yarns Ballerina lace weight yarn (50% Alpaca, 50% Tencel), 925 yards (846 meters)/100 gr – 1.5 skeins
Knit Picks (affiliate link) Shadow Tonal lace weight yarn (100% Merino), 440 yards (402 meters)/50 gr – 4 skeins
The shawl is crocheted using both of these yarns held together. You can use fingering or light fingering weight yarn instead.

Hook: C (2.75 mm)

Gauge: 14 dc = 2” (5 cm)

Abbreviations

ch = chain
st(s) = stitch(es)
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tr – treble crochet

Short Overview of the pattern:

The triangular shawl is worked bottom up, from the pointy end of the shawl, widening gradually. The method allows you to make the shawl to any size you want. Just keep going until the shawl is the size you need. The lace flower borders are worked simultaneously with the body of the shawl. We start with the corner of the two borders, then, after a few rows, begin to crochet the body of the shawl, adding stitches between the borders. The body of the shawl is worked in rows of dc alternating with rows of filet crochet.
