How to Crochet a Pumpkin Applique

This cute crochet pumpkin applique is excellent for the autumn months. You can use it on a hat, blanket, shawl, scarf, and more. Plus, it works nicely as a refrigerator magnet. Add some felt or embroidered triangles to turn it into a jack-o-lantern for Halloween!

About the Pumpkin

This pumpkin pattern is an easy, quick, and small crochet project. Each applique takes up less than 15 yards of yarn and uses a size G 4 mm crochet hook. I use Sugar n Cream 100% cotton in worsted weight since the colors are nice and vibrant. Plus, the yarn is sturdy yet soft. Feel free, however, to use 100% acrylic yarn or any other fiber and weight of yarn.

The applique piece is worked in the round, using double crochet stitches and single crochet stitches. The single crochet stitches are used at the top and bottom of the pumpkin to flatten those two ends. Then we use double crochet along the sides to make the pumpkin wider.

Stem and Curly-Cue

The stem is pretty simple to make. You’ll find the center of the top part of the pumpkin and insert the crochet hook one before that stitch. Then each row consists of three single crochet stitches. I made four rows for my stem, but feel free to make only 2 or 3 (or any number you wish).

Finally, the curly-cue (or is it spelled curlicue? or curlique?) provides the finishing touch. For this part, I created a chain. Then I show in the video how to wrap it around a pencil then saturate it with a solution to keep its shape. You can use a mixture of 50% water and 50% white glue. If you prefer, use a product like Aleene’s Fabric Stiffener. This product comes in a lovely spray bottle and works exceptionally nicely for smaller projects like this.

While I used traditional pumpkin colors in my samples, feel free to use your imagination! Pink, purple, blue, all are very cool. Check out my tips and tricks of matching colors here. And if you need assistance with the basics of crochet, please see my beginner videos on YouTube.
