Pair the miniature ribbed hat with a scarf that has a bit of fringe and you have an attractive adornment for a bottle. This pretty crochet Christmas hat is part of a wine bottle cozy set that I crocheted quite a few of this Holiday season already.

Festive Crochet Hat Garland

This miniature crochet hat pattern works up quickly and if you attach this to some yarn that has been chained, it is such a cute window or fireplace mantel decoration.

The Hat is Worked from the Bottom Up

The pattern works from the bottom up starting with the ribbed brim and decreasing as you work toward the top. The puff on the top is made by crocheting a small square, gathering the sides into a circular shape, and securing to the top.

This hat will stand for a touch of Holiday anywhere in your home. Attach them to the ends of ribbon for a pretty Christmas gift wrapping idea.

Christmas Crochet Hat Video

There are video links for both a right hand and left hand crocheter for the entire hat located below the written pattern.

However, if you are already familiar with the stitches used in this crochet pattern you may need specific stitch refreshers. Those are provided here for you in the crochet tutorial section.

Special Crochet Stitches Used in This Pattern

Crocheting the Front Post and Back Post Double Crochet

The front or back post double crochet stitch is beautiful on its own. However, this makes a great ribbing when the stitches are alternated. Find out how to work each stitch first, then try your hand at combining them.

This is a method of altering between the front post double crochet and back post double crochet.

Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC)

The back post stitches appear to recede on the side of the crocheted fabric that is facing you. Note: Because a post stitch is shorter than a normal stitch, you make the turning chain with one chain stitch less than the normal turning chain requires.

Yarn over, insert the hook from back to front between the posts of the first and second double crochet of the row below. Then insert the hook from the front to the back front between the posts of the second and third stitches. (The hook should now be positioned horizontally in front of the double crochet that you are working around). Yarn over, pull the yarn over the post of the stitch. There should now be 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull the yarn through 2 loops on the hook. Last, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.

Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)

Front post stitches are raised crochet stitches on the surface of the fabric facing you. Note: Because a post stitch is shorter than a normal stitch, you make the turning chain with one chain stitch less than the normal turning chain requires. Yarn over, insert the hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second double crochet of the row below. Then insert the hook from the back to the front between the posts of the second and third stitches. (The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the double crochet that you are working around). Yarn over, pull the yarn around the post of the stitch. There should now be 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull the yarn through 2 loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.

Double Crochet Two Together (DC2Tog)

This decreases the stitches by one double crochet each time this is worked.

Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop. There will be three loops on the crochet hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook. There should now be just two loops left on the hook.

Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop. There will be four loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops. There should now be just three loops on the hook.

Lastly yarn over and pull through the remaining three loops.

Single Crochet Two Together (SC2Tog)

This decreases the stitches by one single crochet each time this is worked.

Insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop. There will be two loops on the crochet hook. Insert the hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop. There will be three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.

Materials

I used 2 yarn colors for this pattern. Approximately 50 yards of each color will be enough to complete this hat (100 yards total).

Red (color 6) and green colors of Mayflower Organic 8/4 yarn from Hobbi. It is a fingering sock weight yarn (1 Super Fine). Approximately 50 yards. (Scheepjes Catona 25 gram would be a wonderful alternative to the Mayflower yarn if you are not able to find that yarn. Here is a link to the Scheepjes yarn. It comes in a wide range of colors.

Green (Color 25) of Cotton Kings 8/4 yarn from Hobbi. It is a fingering sock weight yarn (1 Super Fine). Approximately 50 yards. Round 2

CH 2 (counts as DC), Alternate between FPDC and BPDC around. Join with a SL ST into the beginning top CH 2 ST. (the starting chain is reduced to CH 2 because the stitches are a bit shorter than the regular DC because you are working around the posts with this stitch pattern).

Round 4

Begin Ch 7

Row 1

Work SC in each ST across. Turn

Rows 2-5

CH 1 (does not count as a ST). SC in the first ST and each one across. Turn

Leave a long tail on the little square. Use the yarn needle and weave through the crochet holes on each side and pulling snug when the last side has been weaved through.

Attach the little round ball to the top of the hat using this long tail of yarn. Make sure to weave the beginning tail of yarn into the top of the hat as well.

Weave in all yarn tails of the hat and remove any excess yarn.

Enjoy using the hat as a Holiday decoration, strung garland, or over a wine bottle for a gift.
