Is there anything more mindful than a rhythmical crochet stitch to get lost in? This super simple chunky crochet cowl is made with just slip stitches throughout making it the perfect beginner project, but also one for experienced hands to take some light relief from those bigger projects too.
The best thing about projects like this is that using chunk yarn and simple slip stitch crochet stitches means that they grow really quickly! So grab your yarn and hook and lets make something stylish, stunning and yet simple together.

About the Easy Crochet Cowl Pattern
I don’t know about you but I love nothing more than a quick crochet project sometimes. I always have the monster blankets and never ending sleeves on the go of course but sometimes I just want an easy pattern that I can work without thinking and just enjoy the escapism of crochet and the stitch.
That’s why for this pattern I chose the most simple of stitches, as long as you can slip stitch crochet then you’ll be able to make this cowl!
It’s a great crochet accessory to make for yourself but also fabulous as we approach the gift making season and I know for a fact that they sell really well at craft fairs if you want to make a batch of them!

The Crochet Cowl Tension and Sizing Options
The Cowl measures approx 110cm (43 1/4 in) in circumference so is great to double over to make a cosy neck warmer style or to leave loose as a single loop cowl.
Tension (gauge) is 12 sts and 14 rows to measure 10X10cm (4X4 in) over slip stitch using an 8mm hook, or size needed to obtain correct tension.
Yarn for the Stripe Cowl
To make this crochet Cowl I used West Yorkshire Spinners Retreat (100% wool, 100g/140m) yarn which has the perfect amount of ‘squish’ for this kind of accessory.
You will need:
1 ball of each:
Yarn A: Ponder (393)
Yarn B: Tranquil (341)
Yarn C: Reflect (099)
In total you’ll need approximately 400m of yarn.
A great alternative yarn if you want something with acrylic in it is Hue and Me Yarn from Lion Brand which has the most glorious selection of colours.

Chunky Crochet Cowl - free beginner pattern
The perfect beginner crochet project, this striped chunky crochet cowl uses the simple slip stitch, chunky yarn and hook and so is super quick to make too!
Materials
Yarn
- West Yorkshire Spinners ReTreat
- 100% wool, 100g/140m. 1 ball each of Ponder, Tranquil and Reflect.
Tools
- 8mm/L Crochet Hook
- Or hook needed to obtain gauge.
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
Instructions
Tension
12 sts and 14 rows to measure 10X10cm (4X4 in) over slip stitch.
Size
The cowl measures approx 110cm (43 1/4 in) in circumference.
Notes
The cowl is worked in rows throughout. The final row is joined to the foundation ch at the end to form the cowl shape.
Stitches
ss - slip stitch
Abbreviations
ch(s) - chain(s)
ss - slip stitch
sk - skip
st(s) - stitch(es)
rep - repeat
bl - back loop
fl - front loop
Pattern
- Using Yarn A, ch37
- Row 1: ss in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. [36 sts]
- Row 2: Ch1, ss in fl of each st across, turn.
- Change to Yarn B.
- Rows 3-4: As Row 2.
- Change to Yarn A.
- Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 110cm long.
- Change colour every 2 rows in the following sequence: Yarn B, Yarn C, Yarn A, Yarn B, Yarn C, Yarn A, Yarn B, Yarn A.
- Using Yarn A, ss the fl of the final row to the opposite side of the foundation ch to join.
- Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Notes
The cowl is really easy to adjust to make either bigger or smaller, depending on how you would like to wear it.
If you'd like to make the cowl thinner or thicker just work less or more foundation chains (you can work any number you like) to begin with.
If you would like to make your cowl shorter or longer just work less or more rows of the repeat as you'd like. You'll need to think about how you'd like the colour sequence here before you join the cowl together but you can try it and see how you like it.
