Gauge
15 Stitches per 4 inches. To adjust the width, increase or decrease the beginning chain. This crochet pattern is worked in multiples of 4 + 1. That means that the beginning chain needs to be divisible by 4 plus 1. In other words, this pattern has a beginning chain of 65, which is 4 X 16 + 1 = 65.
Size
Large enough to fit an 18 X 18 inch pillow. However, to accommodate the pillow insert, the actual pillow cover is 19 inches wide. Additionally, because I have a flap that can be buttoned and unbuttoned to remove the pillow, it is 43 inches long. This will accommodate the 18 inch pillow and he flap.
Materials

Begin
CH 65 Starting with the Off White yarn
Row 1
Work 3 DC in the 5th CH from the hook, CH 1 [SK 3 CH STs, 3 Dc in next CH] Repeat between [ ] across until the last 4 CH. SK 3 CH, 2 DC in last CH. Turn
Row 2
CH 2, [(1 DC, 1 Spike ST, 1 DC) worked into the CH 1 SP, CH 1] Repeat between the [ ] across. End with 2 DC in the last CH SP, turn. (the Spike Stitch is detailed above in the Special Stitches area)
Row 3
Change yarn color
CH 2,[(1 DC, 1 Spike ST, 1 DC) worked into the Ch 1 SP, CH 1]. Repeat between the [ ] across. End with 2 DC in the top ST of the beginning Ch 2 SP. Turn.
Rows 4 – 114
Repeat Row 3 for Pattern
Remember, the length is 43 inches to accommodate the 18-inch pillow form and the flap.
The photo below shows the covering folded up to the 18 inch mark.
Row colors:
The chain stitch and first 2 rows are Off White.
The next two rows are Sunset Autumn
Colors are changed every two rows.
I ended with the last row using the Off White Color.
Carry the Yarn up the Side
The yarn is carried up the side. Since there will be a crochet border added, it will cover any yarn that was carried along.
Crochet the Pillow Border using the Off White Yarn
When you complete your final row, do not cut off the yarn yet.
Crochet 3 DC in the corner and continue to crochet down the first side of the pillow cover making sure to crochet through both the front and back of the covering. I worked 2 DC in each CH 3 SP.
To help the corners lay flat, I worked 3 DC in each corner ST.
Crochet the bottom border on the fold of the covering.
This creates a White Frame all the way around the pillow.
Crochet The Top Border on the Fold
Now that the bottom fold has the crochet border complete, and both sides, it is time to crochet the border on the top fold of the pillow.
The off white border should be all the way around the pillow now – with the bottom of the pillow folded up to the 18-inch mark. The photo below is showing the back side. the other side as the flap that will be buttoned.
Join with a Slip Stitch to the top of the beginning double crochet.
You might find it easier to crochet the top fold border after the bottom and sides are complete. That way, you can lay it flat and find the correct row.
Add the Buttons
Lastly, add four 1-inch buttons. I sewed them on with a needle and thread.
