Crochet Pattern by Crafting at the Poole

Hey there, and welcome! I’m Caleb Poole, and I’m so happy to be here on Underground Crafter. A huge thank you to Marie for giving me the opportunity to talk to you all, this is so exciting!

Today, I’ve got a free pocket shawl pattern for ya! It’s made with two skeins (and some change) of Bernat Blanket Yarn Stripes, but the method works with just about any yarn. This is extremely simple, and has lots of easy ways to modify the finished product to fit whomever!

I designed this pattern last year when the craze was high and I wrote my Pocket Shawl pattern roundup. To this day, it’s one of my most popular posts! I didn’t get the pattern finished in time to publish in the roundup, so I put it away for a special occasion. 

Obviously, if you’re going to use a different yarn or make any drastic changes, it’s going to take a lot longer to complete! Just bear that in mind, so you have plenty of time allotted! For me, this took around three hours to complete, and that was while I was designing it, so once you get into a rhythm you could probably finish an entire shawl in two.

With that, here’s the pattern!

Supplies

• 500 yards of Bernat Blanket Stripes, Super Bulky. I used Seaside.
• Size P/12mm. crochet hook or whatever size you need to obtain gauge. (shawl)
• Size N/8.0mm. crochet hook or whatever size you need to obtain gauge. (pockets)
• Yarn/Tapestry needle

Gauge (shawl)

• With suggested yarn and hook, crochet a 10 dc by 4-row swatch. 8 sts by 4 rows =4″x4″ (10 cmx10 cm)

Gauge (pockets)

• With suggested yarn and hook, crochet an 11 dc by 7-row swatch. 9 sts by 5 rows =4″x4″ (10 cmx10 cm)

Notes

• Stitch counts are listed in parentheses at the end of each row
• Pockets should be moved up or down depending on your height during assembly.
• Depending on what drape you want, as well as the warmth you want from this shawl, you may want to use a much smaller or larger hook. Make sure to swatch and decide! The gauge I have listed lets some air between the stitches when moving around; mostly because it doesn’t get super cold here.
• Changing the width and length of this shawl goes a little like this:
  • Width: Add or subtract an even number of stitches to the first row. On increase rows, add the extra stitches outside the increases. i.e If you were to add 10 stitches to the width Row 16 would look like this: “Dc 14, dc inc, dc 5, dc inc, dc 14, ch 2, and turn. (37 sts)”
  • Length: Add or subtract rows to the center section to change the width of the shawl. This would be Rows 23-48.

• Ch(s): chain(s)
• Dc: double crochet- yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through two loops, yarn over, and pull through last two loops. Video Tutorial

• Row 1: FDC 25, ch 2 and turn. (25 sts)
• Row 2: Dc 24, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (25 sts)
• Rows 3-14: Repeat row 2.
• Row 15: Dc 9, dc inc, dc 5, dc inc, dc 9, ch 2 and turn. (27 sts)
• Row 16: Dc 26, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (27 sts)
• Row 17: Dc 9, dc inc, dc 7, dc inc, dc 9, ch 2 and turn. (29 sts)
• Row 18: Dc 28, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (29 sts)
• Row 19: Dc 3, dc inc, dc 21, dc inc, dc 2, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (31 sts)
• Row 20: Dc 30, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (31 sts)
• Row 21: Repeat row 20. (31 sts)
• Row 22: Dc 3, dc inc, dc 23, dc inc, dc 2, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (33 sts)
• Rows 23-48: Dc 32, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (33 sts)
• Row 49: Dc 3, dc2tog, 23, dc2tog, dc 2, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (31 sts)
• Row 50: Dc 30, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (31 sts)
• Row 51: Repeat row 50. (31 sts)
• Row 52: Dc 3, dc2tog, 21, dc2tog, dc 2, ENDC, Ch 2 and turn. (29 sts)
• Row 53: Dc 28, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (29 sts)
• Row 54: Dc 10, dc2tog, dc 5, dc2tog, dc 9, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (27 sts)
• Row 55: Dc 26, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (27 sts)
• Row 56: Dc 9, dc2tog, dc 5, dc2tog, dc 8, ENDC. (25 sts)
• Row 57-69: Dc 24, ENDC, ch 2 and turn.
• Row 70: Dc 24, ENDC. Ch 1 and fasten off. Weave in ends.

Pockets

• Make 2.
• Row 1: FDC 24, ch 2 and turn. (24 sts)
• Row 2: Dc 23, ENDC, ch 2 and turn. (24 sts)
• Rows 3-9: Repeat row 2. (24 sts)
• Row 10: Dc 23, ENDC, ch 1 and bind off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Assembly

• Sew one pocket on each end of the shawl 4 stitches in on each side, and two rows up from the end of the shawl.
