Easy Granny Square Pattern for the Home
A granny square is a popular crochet pattern that has been around for decades. It’s used to create everything from afghans, clothing, and home décor items. This easy crochet project took me about 15 hours to make. So, if you have a few hours each day for a week, you can have this beauty done too.

Sparkling Christmas Yarn for a Pretty Display
When my daughter and I were taking photos to show you how attractive this doily is with the sparkling yarn, we had a hard time getting the green to show up true to color. It looks more like black and grey in the camera lens.
One of the ideas he tried for getting getter coloring was to turn off the lighting and try to use a bit less light to show the true colors of the yarn.
Well, I am not sure that we have still captured the yarn colors, but we did see how the sparkles in the yarn twinkle in the light. Just imagine this doily under your favorite Christmas village display or other Holiday decorations. If there is anything with a pretty lighting display, this handmade doily will give you a glittery light show.
Changing Doily Design
When I as first deciding how to make this pattern, the yarn seemed a bit thin to be a doily. Therefore, I used two skeins of yarn together. You can see from the photo how the first attempt looked. It was okay, but really did not tick my boxes.
After taking out the stitches, I used just one strand of yarn. The colors of the yarn really looked lovely with just one strand of yarn. While I was initially worried about the thickness of the yarn for the doily, it turns out it is just the perfect thickness.
The result is a light and lacy table centerpiece that can be used throughout the home. As a centerpiece under a statement piece or even under your Holiday decorations.
Lacy Christmas Doily Pattern
I used a bit larger crochet hook than what the yarn calls for as I wanted a lacy look to the granny square pattern. The yarn is a fine fingering sock yarn that has long Christmas colors throughout the yarn with a thin glittery thread spun in. It adds just the right amount of glamour and glitter to this project without adding too much bling.

Christmas Universe yarn from Hobbii in color number 22 (Twinkle Star), 505 yards. If you are not able to find this yarn locally, you can find it here. Note: this is a seasonal yarn and may not be available year-round. However, any fingering yarn will work well with this crochet pattern.

Crochet Pattern Notes
This crochet pattern is worked as a continuous granny square, with the doily growing in size with each round.
Round 1 crochet stitches are worked inside the initial circle.
My crochet doily is 27 rounds.
Granny Cluster, or shell: A granny cluster is a term for a special crochet stitch that consists of a set of 3 double crochets, all worked into one stitch or space. The clusters are then separated from one another with chain stitches. You can find a photo tutorial on how to crochet the granny square, which will be helpful if you are a beginner at crochet.

Crochet Pattern
Begin
CH 4 in the 4th CH from the hook, work a SL ST to form a circle.
Round 1
Chain 3. (This counts as a DC.) Working inside the circle, work: 2 DC and CH 3. Continue working in the ring and work (3DC, CH 3) three times. Join with a SL ST into the 3rd CH of the beginning CH STs.
This will complete the first round of the granny square. There should be 4 clusters of 3 DC with 4 areas of CH 3 between. (The CH 3 Spaces are the corners.)
Round 2
Chain 4. (This counts as 1 DC plus CH 1.) In the next CH 3 SP work (3 DC, CH 3, 3 DC, CH 1). In the next 2- CH 3 Spaces, work (3 DC, CH 3, 3 DC, CH 1). You should now have three sets of 3 DC, 3- CH 3 Spaces, and 3-CH 1 Spaces. In the last CH 3 SP, work (3 DC, CH 3, 2 DC). End the round by joining with a SL ST into the 3rd CH of the beginning CH STs. (You should have 8 shells, 4 chain 3 spaces, and 4 CH 1 spaces).
Round 3
Chain 3. (This counts as 1 DC.) Then into the same space, work: 2 DC, CH 1. (This completes the first granny cluster of this round.) Skip the 3 DC of the previous row. In the next CH 3 SP, work (3 DC, CH 3, 3 DC, Ch 1). In the next CH 1 SP work 3 DC and 1 CH. Skip to the CH 3 Space in the corner and work (3 DC, CH 3, 3 DC, Ch 1). Repeat steps 4 and 5 two more times until all 4 corners are complete. After the last DC in the CH 3 space CH 1 and SL ST into the top ST of the first DC of this round. (You should have 12 shells and 4-CH 1 spaces and 4 CH 3 spaces after the completion of this round).
Round 4-27
Repeat rounds 2 and 3.
Now that you know the pattern, you can keep adding rows to make the granny square as large as you like.
Finishing The Granny Square Doily
Pull the yarn through the last ST. Leave about a 12-inch yarn tail. Using the yarn needle, weave the ends yarn back and forth through the crochet stitches until a bit snug. Cut off excess yarn.
