My friend Michele at Stitch & Hustle has organized a blog hop focusing on one particular stitch for the last several years. This year’s theme is Puff the Magic Stitch. You can find out why Michele calls the puff stitch the magic stitch and get more details on the blog hop here. I am also a huge fan of the puff stitch so I decided to join this blog hop. If you’re new to the puff stitch, I have a video tutorial below in the pattern that demonstrates the stitch and also explains how puffs are different from bobbles and popcorns.

The nice folks at WeCrochet provided materials for this blog hop, and I got to try out a new-to-me yarn, Hawthorne Speckle Hand Painted. I really loved the subtlety of the colors. Originally, I was thinking I might design a shawl…

…but after I got started crocheting, I thought a bandana cowl crochet pattern would be fun for this transitional weather we’ve been having lately.

The puff stitches, worked throughout the pattern and then later on the border, really pack a textured punch! And, best of all, as a bandana cowl, it’s a one-skein pattern. It’s a great way to try out a new yarn. It also makes a quick-ish project for gifting!

A puff stitch variation on the popular v-stitch adds a textured look to this granny stitch bandana cowl. In colder weather, add a button, brooch, or shawl pin to wrap the cowl tighter around your neck. This pattern is a great way to use just one skein of a special, hand painted skein of fingering yarn. This pattern was designed for Stitch & Hustle’s Puff the Magic Stitch Blog Hop.
