What is Mosaic Crochet?

Mosaic crochet is a technique in crochet that is derived from mosaic knitting. Barbara G. Walker popularized mosaic knitting several decades ago. Both the crocheted and knitted version create intricate geometric designs in the world.

Mosaic crochet is made by following a chart. The chart contains blocks aligned in a grid. Each block equates to a stitch on a row. This stitch can either be a single crochet, a chain-two, or a double crochet made two rows below. Plus, each block has a color. If the color corresponds to the yarn color you are using for that row, you make a certain stitch. If it does not correspond, you make another stitch. And if it has an X in it, you make yet a third type of crochet stitch.

Once you figure out the meaning of the three different types of stitches, and figure out how to follow along in the chart, mosaic crochet becomes really easy to do. And the results are fantastic!

I highly recommend Mrs. Barbara G. Walker’s Mosaic Knitting book. In it, there are a ton of charts that you can use to convert mosaic knitting over to mosaic crochet.

Basket Weave Design

If you know me, you know I love both baskets and basket weave designs and have quite a number of tutorial videos, which you can find here. This particular one is a nice basic one that has an easy-to-remember pattern.

With practice blocks like this, I generally do two things with them. First, I turn them into dishcloths, which is what this pattern is. And two, I like to put a single crochet border edging around each block, then connect them together to form a large blanket. You can see the several different ways of connecting square together in this tutorial and corresponding video.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial video and written pattern with chart!
