Best Yarn for a Crochet Washcloth Pattern

I used a light DK weight organic cotton yarn and a 4mm hook. I wanted a lighter weight yarn for my crochet baby washcloth. Cotton yarn is durable and easy to wash and dry, and also holds its shape well.

You can also choose an aran weight or worsted weight cotton yarn and a 5mm crochet hook and you are good to go! A Cotton and Acrylic mix yarn is also suitable and is soft for baby’s delicate skin.

The lovely textured stitch used is also suitable for a crochet dishcloth pattern. One ball of yarn (approx. 100 yds) is usually plenty for a single washcloth/dishcloth and you can choose your color palette to make them unique for the perfect gift.

Crochet Valentine’s Day Washcloth with Crochet Hearts

A crochet washcloth embellished with crochet hearts would make a lovely gift for Valentine’s Day. Check out my pretty pattern for vintage style crochet hearts that you can make in a contrasting color, and sewn on with a needle and thread.

The washcloth with its adorable hearts is sure to brighten up any bathroom!

What Size to Make a Crochet Washcloth for a Baby

I made my washcloth approx. 9in x 9in. Store bought washcloths can often be on the small size so I like this size that fits well in my hand.

The best thing about this crochet pattern is that it is so versatile and suitable for a beginner. Chain the amount of stitches you require for your size, just make sure you have an even number of chains to begin. You can adjust the size to make the washcloth larger or smaller.

Stitches for a Crocheted Washcloth

The washcloth pattern uses only basic crochet stitches – single crochet and double crochet. You will also use the Crab Stitch (also called reverse single crochet) for the crochet washcloth border.

You can find instructions for the Crab Stitch Pattern, including a video in this blog post – Crab Stitch
