Technique: Tunisian Crochet
Finished Size
32″ x 34″ (length measured from point to point)
Materials
- Lion Brand Yarns “Mandala Baby” 100% acrylic, 590 yds per 5.3 oz: 2 cakes of color Wishing Well, or approximately 1180 yards comparable DK weight yarn (CYC size 3 yarn)
- Tunisian Crochet Hook Size: 5.5mm
- Yarn needle (for seaming and weaving ends)
Special Stitches
Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss): Insert hook in a side to side motion (right to left for right-handers or left to right for left-handers) under front vertical bar, yarn over, pull loop through. Click here for further stitch instruction.
Tunisian Purl Stitch (tps): With yarn in front, insert hook from side-to-side under indicated front vertical bar, yarn over, pull loop through. Click here for further stitch instruction.
Tunisian Two Together (tss2tog): Insert hook from side to side (right to left for right-handers and left to right for left-handers) under TWO front vertical bars at the same time, yarn over, pull loop through.
Tunisian Chain Back Bar Stitch (tchbs): Insert hook from front to back under the horizontal bar and pull loop through. In this pattern, it’s easy to spot since it closes three stitches together. The loops will be showing very clearly.
Gauge
22 stitches for 11 rows measures 4″; each chevron measures about 4″ across
Skill Level
Intermediate. It’s helpful to have some experience in Tunisian crochet since being able to “read the stitches” makes this easier.
Notes
Project is made flat. It’s helpful, although not crucial, to have a pliable cord on the hook so the loops can be better distributed. There may be slight curling at the bottom which was easily removed with a light blocking.
Stitch Multiple
To change the size of your project, chain a multiple of 20, plus 19.
Tunisian Crochet Pattern Instructions
Row 1
A: Ch 159, sk first ch, [insert hook in next ch, yo, pull lp through (leave lp on hook)] 8 times, *insert hook in next ch, yo, pull lp through, yo, insert hook in same ch, yo, pull lp through (3 lps made in 1 st), [insert hook in next ch, yo, pull lp through] 19 times, rep from * to last 10 ch, insert hook in next ch, yo, pull lp through, yo, insert hook in same ch, yo, pull lp through, [insert hook in next ch, yo, pull lp through] 9 times–175 lps on hook.
B: Ch 1 (closes first stitch), *[yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] 19 times, yo, pull through 4 lps on hook (closes 3 sts), rep from * to last 20 sts, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] 20 times, ending with one lp on hook (counts as first st of next row).
Row 2
A: Sk first vertical bar, tss2tog (see Special Stitches), [tps in next st (see Special Stitches), tss in next st (see Special Stitches)] 3 times, tps in next st, *[tss, yo, tss] in next st, [tps in next st, tss in next st ] 4 times, tss in next st, tchbs (see Special Stitches), tss in next st, [tss in next st, tps in next st] 4 times, rep from * to last 11 sts, [tss, yo, tss] in next st, [tps in next st, tss in next st] 3 times, tps in next st, tss2tog, insert hook under 2 lps of last st, yo, pull lp through–175 lps on hook .
B: Ch 1, *[yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] 19 times, yo, pull through 4 lps on hook, rep from * to last 20 sts, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] 20 times, 1 lp remaining on hook.
Repeat row 2 until piece measures 34″ (approximately 87 rows).
Binding Off
Sk first vertical bar, *insert hook as for tss (see Note) in next st, yo, pull lp through st AND through lp on hook (slip stitch made), rep from * across. Fasten off. Note: at the base of each chevron, insert hook as for tchbs when making the slip stitch bind off.
Finishing
With yarn needle, weave in the ends carefully.
