Flower Granny Echo Crochet Afghan – Mitered Crochet Blanket – Free crochet pattern

This Flower Granny Echo Mitered Crochet Blanket starts off with the Flower Granny Square and then continues to make this simple echo like effect for this corner blanket that’s called Mitered Crochet. You use only 2 sides of the granny so they are in short rows for each side and easy to keep track of the stitch count.

Use any 4 colors you like, but I recommend using your lightest color for the border rows. Keep crocheting the repeat until you have it as big as you want.

THE GRANNY SQUARE PORTION you can find at this link.

Once you have your granny complete, then continue here. Be sure to cut your yarn form your granny and make sure your tails are at the bottom so your afghan will look neater.

THE AFGHAN PORTION

This is where the granny square pattern ends and the Afghan portion of this afghan begins.

Using the same color attach your yarn back to a corner space. Specfically to the second DC of a corner. Meaning when you made your corners on your granny you did a DC 1, ch 2, DC 1 to create your corner. So we’re skipping the first DC and ch 2 and will be using the last DC of the corner to attach our color back.

It’s preferred to choose a side where your “ugly mid row start” from our granny stays on the bottom.

We will now be working in ROWS so you will need to ch and turn your project after every row.

Row 14 – still using your 2nd Color (Dark Grey)

Attach your yarn using a the SC attachment technique or sl st, ch 1 then sc in 1st stitch. The SC attachment looks way better though.

SC attachment on the 1st DC after the corner.

SC the remaining 33 sts until your corner space.

SC, CH 2, SC in corner CH 2 space

SC 34 sts until corner. Ch 2 and TURN your work.

Row 15 (Dark Grey)

The Ch 2 – the ch 2 WILL count as the 1st stitch

DC in the next 34 sts until corner.

DC , CH 2, DC in corner. DC in the next 35 sts.

Ch 1 and TURN your work.

Row 16 (Dark Grey)

SC the 36 sts until your corner space.

SC, CH 2, SC in corner CH 2 space

SC the all your DC’s as well as your ending ch 2. 36 sts in total for the side. Ch 1 and cut your yarn.

This will be the only time we’ll fasten off and will have to change the afghans facing. For row 17 and on you’ll just change colors at the end of the row then continue.

So attach your Off White Color or BORDER Row color you’ve chosen.

Make sure that when you do a BORDER Row that your afghan’s front side / Good side is facing you.

Row 17 – With Off White Color or BORDER Row color

Attach your yarn using a the SC attachment technique or sl st, ch 1 then sc in 1st stitch. The SC attachment looks way better though.

SC until the corner, you should have 37 sc’s on this side

SC, CH 2, SC in corner CH 2 space

Ch 1 and turn.

SCFS on the next 38 post sts

The corner SC can be a bit tricky looking.

So when you reach the end you’ll see 3 strings instead of just 2.

–IMPORTANT.

Be sure to use the first 2 strings as a stitch, then use the smaller single string as a stitch. If you don’t then you will lose a stitch here and you don’t want that! Giving you 39 sts before the corner for a total of 40 sts for each side.

SC, CH 2, SC in corner CH 2 space

BPSC the 39 sc’s on the final side.

Ch 2 and Turn

If you have a bit more stitches it’s okay. I know it can be hard to get this perfect without counting every row, so if you’re off a stitch or two by the end it’s okay. Just stay consistent on the amount of stitches you do have from here on out.

The Border

Row 70 change to BORDER color

Repeat row 29 to create your border as you did before for two of the sides. Once you reach the end of the row like you usually would, instead make this last SC of the row into a corner,

Ch 2 and SC back into the same st. Now along the side stitches. I used 7 sc’s in the colored sections and 1 in the border row for a total of 8. I had 10 lines so 80 sts, plus roughly 40 sts down the side of the granny.

I’ll refer to the stitches by their row.

SC in the SC row, SC only twice in the DC row, SC in SC row, SC only twice in the DC row, SC in SC row then you’ll reach your border row. SC in it as well. Repeat this for the side. In corners do a SC, ch 2, SC.

I had 91 stitches along my top and my sides were 120

Row 71 (90 sts per side) BORDER color

Ch 2 and DC in all SC’s around. In corners do a DC, ch 2, DC.

I had 93 stitches along my top and my sides were 122
