Design
Today’s free crochet pattern is the Solar Sideways Shawl, this shawl is perfect for Summer evenings as it has some open lacy stitches with only a two row repeat, I would say it’s a beginner plus crochet pattern – I would advise though if you are struggling a bit to understand where the stitches go, in the premium PDF version there is a photo tutorial to make it a lot easier for you to understand. For this shawl I used Cascade 220 Aran in the color Nectarine.

For this shawl pattern i used Cascade 220 which has an AMAZING amount of different shades which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for projects. It is made with 100% highland Peruvian wool and is perfect for shawl projects as it blocks so nicely as it really opens up the stitch definition and that is exactly what you want when blocking a shawl.
This yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a shawl that you want to last for years then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that.

Yarn Substitutions:
You can easily substitute the yarn i used for a more of an affordable yarn or one that is machine washable. Just remember acrylic yarn doesn’t wet block as well as wool but you could always carefully steam block your shawl.

R1. Ch71, 1sc in 9th ch from the hook * Ch5, skip next 3chs, 1sc in next ch, ch3, skip next 2chs ** 1dc in next 2chs, ch3, skip next 2chs, 1sc in next ch * Repeat from * to * until 1 chain remains ending last repeat at ** 1dc in last ch, turn
R2. Ch1, 2dc in first dc * 1dc in next ch3 loop, ch1, skip next sc, 3dc in next ch5 loop, ch1, skip next sc, 1dc in next ch3 loop ** 2dc in next 2dc * Repeat from * to * until 1 stitch remains ending last repeat at ** 2dc in top of last stitch, turn

Repeat rows 2 & 3 until shawl measures 61.5 inches approx finishing on row 2.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Move on to blocking.
Notes:
If you would like your shawl longer, carry on repeating rows 2 & 3 finishing on row 2 but please note you will need more yarn to do this.
Blocking:
Don’t be scared to really stretch the shawl when blocking as it really opens up the stitches and gives them definition and makes your shawl lay completely flat.
Soak finished shawl for 20 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp shawl on blocking boards and stretch to 16.5 inch width x 64 inch length (or to your desired width and length) use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your shawl dry completely before unpinning.
