Use this handy jump-to menu, to quickly get back to where you left off.

What You’ll Need To Crochet My Summer Bag

You can use any type of yarn you like and choose to use 1 colour or a mix of colours. Different yarn weights and hook sizes will determine the size of your bags. Use the guides below to help choose a size.

Bag sizes:
DK/Light Worsted yarn with 4mm hook = W3.5″/9cm x H 5.5″/14cm
Aran/Worsted yarn with 5mm hook = W 4.5″/11.5cm x H 6.5″/16.5cm
Chunky/Bulky yarn with 6mm hook = W 5.5″/14cm x H 7″/18cm

Case sizes:
Keep the width shorter by using a 4mm hook.
DK/Light Worsted yarn = W 3.5″/9cm x H 7″/18cm
Aran/Worsted yarn = W 4″/10cm x H7.5″/19cm

Purse size:
DK/Light Worsted yarn with 4mm hook = W 3.5″/9cm x H 3″/7.5cm

For the Summer Bag, you’ll need approximately 80-120yds of your chosen yarn, depending on the length and the type of straps you choose to make. You’ll use less than that for the purse or case options.

You’ll also need a yarn needle, scissors, and a stitch marker.

You will also need a button for the closure, but, I’ve also included instructions to crochet a button.

Gauge: Exact gauge isn’t too important. Just use a hook size recommended for your chosen yarn weight.

Crochet Stitches & Terms Used For The Summer Bag

This pattern is written using US crochet terms. Please refer to my Crochet Terms Conversion Chart for help with translating into UK terms.

(ch) Chain, (sp or sps) Space/s, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (dec) Decrease in single crochet, (dc) Double Crochet,

(2dcCL) 2 Double Crochet Cluster – yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, insert into the same place, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 3 loops

We will also use the Crab Stitch aka reverse single crochet for joining the sides. But, you could flip the piece over and just work single crochets instead, if you prefer.

Numbers shown in ( ) at the end of each row/round indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of that row/round.

Instructions inside [ ] are to be worked into the same stitch/place.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x. For example: “dc, 2dc,” would mean dc into next st, and make 2 dc in the following st. Or “sc x3, 2hdc, ” would mean sc into each of the next 3 stitches, 2 hdc in the next st.

Crochet Summer Bag Free Pattern Notes

The top flap and main bag are made together in one long piece. It is folded and joined along the sides. The shaping is made at either end of the starting chain. The pattern remains the same for purses and cases with only a change in the starting chain and the number of stitches along the middle. The main pattern will follow instructions for the bags with changes for purses or cases shown as: (purse/case).

The pattern includes options for 3 different strap/handle styles, rounded, flat or wide.

A close up of the 3 different types of straps that can be made for the Floretta bag crochet pattern. Flat, wide and rounded.

Joining the Floretta Summer Crochet Bag

The fan end is the top flap and the flatter end is the bottom.

The main Floretta summer bag after completing round 4 of the crochet pattern

Fold the bottom end up to meet the base of the top flap, with the wrong sides touching inside.

Please note: The following are right-handed instructions to work crab stitches for joining the sides. Adjust your position accordingly for left-handed crocheting or if you’d prefer to join with single crochets. You’ll want to be working from the top flap of the bag towards the bottom fold for the first side join, and from the bottom fold up to the top for the second side join.

Step 1.

Slip the loop off your hook and hook through the second dc st down from the top flap, going through the right side of the piece.

Step 2.

Place the loop back on the hook and pull the loop through, ch1. Now with the back of the bag and top flap to the left, right side of work facing you, work crab stitches (reverse single crochet) along the side, match up and go through stitches of both side edges to join.

Step 3.

Continue to the end of this side. You will have an odd single st left at the end, just leave this unworked and fasten off.

A 3 part instructional image showing how to join the first side of the Floretta summer bag using the crochet crab stitch

Step 4.

Use a stitch marker to help you aline the other side. Find the middle of the 3dc stitches on the other corner of the bottom end, and match up with the second dc stitch down from the top flap on the other side. Place your stitch marker through these stitches to keep the placement.

Step 5.

Follow the stitches along from the marker, matching each side up as you go, to find the 2 pairing stitches at the bottom. You will have an odd single stitch left at the very end again, ignore this and pair the stitches on either side. Join yarn to these bottom stitches and ch1.

Step 6.

Work crab stitches along both side edges to join this side, finishing in the stitches of your stitch marker. If you will not be adding a strap/handle, fasten off here and weave in ends. If you will be adding a strap/handle, do not fasten off yet, continue onto the strap.

Crocheting the Bag Strap or Handle

Choose between a flat strap or wide strap, or a rounded look strap (shown in the notes section above).

You can make your strap or handle any length you require. This will vary depending on how you wish to wear the bag, ie. carry handle, shoulder strap or across the body. It will also depend on who the bag is for, child or adult.

Step 1.

Continuing from joining, chain any number of chains until you reach your desired length. Add approximately another inch of chains to this length to allow for the chain contracting when worked.

Step 2.

Keeping your chain straight, without twisting, join to the other side of your bag by slip stitching through the top stitches previously used for joining, and ch1.

Step 3.

Work into the back bumps of your chain, following the instructions for your chosen straps.

Crocheting Flat Straps:

sc in each back bump along the chain, finish by slip stitching through the top side stitches of bag previously used for joining. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Crocheting Wide Straps:

dc in each back bump along the chain, finish by slip stitching through the top side stitches of bag previously used for joining. Fasten off and weave in ends.

A 3 part instructional image showing how add flat or wide straps to the Floretta crochet bag

Crocheting Rounded Straps:

sl st in each back bump along the chain, when you reach the end sl st through the top side stitches of the bag previously used for joining. You will have 2 lines of Vs, going in opposite directions, next to each other on one side (front) and what looks like lines or straight stitches going down the middle on the other side (back). Working with this back side facing you, hook through at the base of the straight stitches, coming out in between the 2 lines of Vs on the front, and work slip stitches back along to the other end. Finish by slip stitching through the top side stitches of the bag and fasten off, weaving in ends.

Please note: Your straps will look shorter than intended at first, but as you fill and use the bag, you should find that the weight will allow the bag to sit where you wanted.

Adding a Button for the Bag Closure

The outer gap in the centre petal of the top flap will be used as the buttonhole. You can use any button that will fit through this gap. The button is attached over the first ch st used in making the bag (end of starting ch), where there is a larger gap from working 6 dc into the ch st.

Crocheting A Button (Free Crochet Pattern)

To crochet a button, keep to the same yarn weight and hook,

R1.

Start with a magic ring, sc x6 into the ring, pull closed and sl st into the first st to join. (6)

R2.

2sc in each st, sl st into first to join. (12)

R3.

dec x6, sl st into first to join. (6)
