How to Crochet a Ripple Afghan Pattern

Crochet ripple blankets are very popular and you can see why! Once you get the hang of the ripple pattern, you will be amazed at how fast your blanket will grow.

The pattern only uses double crochet stitches. You will increase stitches in one place to create the ‘peak’ of your ripple and decrease to create the ‘valley’.

The blanket consists of just one repeat row and basic crochet stitches, so confident beginners can make this easy pattern.

This easy ripple stitch blanket does not need a border but you could choose to add one if you wish.

Yarn for Easy Ripple Baby Blanket Pattern

I used one of my favourite worsted weight yarns – Stylecraft Special Aran. It is widely available and is a beautiful acrylic soft yarn that is lovely to use. And easily washable which is very important for a baby blanket! Any alternative worsted weight/aran yarn can be used for this blanket.

You could also use a chunky/bulky weight yarn and matching hook. See below how to make a swatch to work out your size.

I choose 6 colors to create my baby blanket. You can find the list of colors below. Have fun choosing your own colors and get creative!

How to Crochet a Ripple Blanket in a Different Size

How many stitches for a crochet ripple blanket? If you would like to make a blanket larger or smaller than the pattern given, it is easy to do!

I suggest you make a sample swatch of 2 pattern repeats and use that to work out your blanket width.

See ‘Making a Pattern Swatch’ below.

Each multiple is approximately 2.75in {7cm] wide using a worsted weight yarn and 5mm crochet hook. I made 11 multiple repeats for my foundation chain (plus 3 extra) and my blanket is approximately 30in [76cm] wide.

1 multiple = 14 chains

More Examples in Worsted Weight Yarn

For a ripple baby blanket that is approximately 22in [56cm] wide, you will need 8 pattern repeats.

14 x 8 = 112

112 + 3 = 115

You will need a starting chain of 115

For a ripple lap blanket that is approximately 36in [91cm] wide, you would need 13 pattern repeats.

14 x 13 = 182

182 + 3 = 185

You will need a starting chain of 185
