The ‘Shrooms and Blooms Wall Hanging Free Crochet Pattern

[Image description] A colorful mushroom and white flower wall hanging, the 'Shrooms and Blooms Wall Hanging, hangs against a tan wall

You know what they say: “April showers bring May flowers” well, here where I live we had so much rain in April that it brought more than just flowers – a new mushroomy wall hanging! This week’s new pattern and the first design of May is the ‘Shrooms and Blooms Wall Hanging.
As you probably know, I’m just wild about mushrooms. I love them! Love them! And in the last couple of years I’ve really been having a great time designing things with mushrooms on them (see a bunch here for instance) and when inspiration struck for this month’s wall hanging I had to make sure it had mushrooms on it.

Originally this design started out as a vase full of flowers. I wanted something simple, calm, and bright. Then my brain immediately thought “what about adding a mushroom or two?” and so I did. And then I took the vase out, I added more flowers and some fun green leaves and before I knew it, I was really loving the bright and colorful look of the whole thing. So… gone was my “simple and calm” idea and in its place slightly more eye-catching number but I’m pretty happy with it.
And you know I had to add more fun with fringe that continues the colors used on Row 1 down and some stars to add a bit of “magic” to the whole thing. I really wanted to lean into the “fairy land” look of it. I almost added more stars but at some point there’s going to be diminishing returns when it comes to customization. Ya know? But at least it looks great now.

For this wall hanging I mostly used a bobbin technique (keeping the yarn attached to the skein or multiple skeins as the case often is) and made sure to turn the piece back and forth rather than in a circle as I worked the rows. I have a couple Reels on my Instagram that show how I change colors from the front and also the back, so if you’re struggling with changing colors those might help you. But I firmly believe that anyone can make a color work project like this, you just need to know how to make a single crochet 🙂 Oh, and don’t forget to block – it helps color work so much.

And keeping with industry standards, if you’d like written instructions to this pattern you can pick those up in my Ravelry shop. I know talking about money makes people uncomfortable but I split up these patterns this way so that people do have an incentive to pick up the pdf, it helps me to keep making patterns here on my blog. I hope you understand.

Overall, I really do hope you like this week’s new pattern. I had a ball making it and designing it. It went through so many different iterations before I settled on this one. I think it looks all bright and fun and would make a wonderful pillow or bag if you don’t want it as a wall hanging.
Remember to be kind to yourself and others, and wash your hands and masks.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by We Crochet for the purposes of designing the ‘Shrooms and Blooms Wall Hanging crochet pattern, without compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I’ve used Brava Worsted many times for home decor, garments, and whatnot and it’s one of my favorite worsted yarns to use.

Begin with a ch 60 in color A, turn, and start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn” and all st counts are 59 sc.

Top/ Hanging
With color A, sew your wooden dowel or stick to your wall hanging (or sc into the last row across if you’d like).
For the hanger, ch 80 with color A and tie the ends to the first and last sts on the final row of the wall hanging.

Fringe (optional)
Feel free to add any details, such a fringe or surface crochet, to customize the final look of your wall-hanging. I added pieces of fringe to the other side of Row 1 to match the colors used on Row 1 and a 4 colorful stars to add a bit more “magic” to the design.
