Whether you’re an experienced crocheter or just beginning to discover the wonders of yarn and hook, this pattern is sure to ignite your creativity and leave you with a beautiful keepsake that embodies both skill and sentiment.

Once you get started, you will see why this is a very popular stitch pattern among crocheters.

What Makes This Crochet Blanket So Easy?

This blanket consists of just one repeat row and basic crochet stitches. Which makes this easy enough for confident beginners to make this easy pattern, yet fun enough for experienced crocheters.

The free pattern only uses double crochet stitches. Increase stitches to form the peak and decrease stitches to create the valley.

This easy ripple stitch blanket does not need a border; however, you could choose to add one if you wish.

It is a quick baby blanket pattern that uses just one skein of yarn. Additionally, the double crochet stitch is one of those basic stitches and it is considered by many to be the fastest crochet stitch to work.

Finished Size Options

This pattern includes three finish size options along with the stitch multiple so you can make any size blanket or afghan you desire.

  • Baby 30” X 30”
  • Child or Lapghan 38” X 38”
  • Throw 38” X 54”

For this blanket, I used 2 ½ yarn cakes. The half cake of yarn went to the Easy Crochet Modern Granny Blanket, which is another gorgeous blanket using this yarn color. If you happen to have 3 full skeins to make this beautiful blanket, just make a larger blanket. Add more stitches to your beginning chain stitches according to the stitch multiple. I would probably add 24 – 36 more chain stitches. Then crochet until you use up all the yarn.

If you struggle with what size to make a blanket, I can help. Check out the Crochet Guidelines for Standard Bed and Blanket Sizes.

How to Crochet a Ripple Blanket in a Different Size?

If you are newer to crochet, you may be wondering how many stitches for a crochet ripple blanket? If you would like to make a blanket larger or smaller than the pattern given, it is easy to do.

The size of your project can easily be adjusted using multiples of 12 plus 3. That means your initial chain should be divisible by 12. Then add three more chain stitches.

Here is a mathematical example, 12 X 3 = 36. Then add three more. This becomes 39. Therefore, your beginning foundation chain stitch should be 39 stitches.

Yarn for This Pattern

Today, I used a Caron Cotton Cakes medium weight yarn. It is a variegated yarn, so the gorgeous yarn colors change on their own throughout the blanket as I crochet along. Much less yarn ends to weave in. However, this would be a great pattern for any alternative worsted weight, aran yarn, or a bulky yarn weight.

No matter if you use the medium weight yarn or chunky weight yarn, just make sure to use a matching hook and make a swatch to help you make sure this is the result you were looking for. This pattern is beautiful in a wide variety of colors.

Crochet Pattern Notes

Turn at the end of each row.

The chain three at the beginning of each row counts as a double crochet.

Repeat row 2 throughout the pattern.

It is quite easy to keep track of where you left off with the repeating pattern. When working the double crochet two together stitches, they create the valleys. Working two double crochet stitches in one stitch creates the soft peaks. These are the two key elements in working the simple ripple stitch.

Keep your stitches loose. Make sure to place your last stitch in the top stitch of the previous row turning chain. This helps make the sides very straight.
