Bonnie Baby Blanket Pattern

My sister is having a baby girl! So I’m now making all the blankets I possibly can before Christmas as she is due on the 25th December!

The first blanket I’m starting with is this beautiful blanket which I’m calling the bonnie baby blanket. Each new blanket pattern I make will be a name suggestion for my sister….Small hints and all that!

It looks beautiful and complicated but it’s the EASIEST blanket you’ll ever make! The blanket took me around a day to finish so it’s a beautiful last minute gift idea. You can change the colours to which ever colours you prefer or use the same as I have. Remember if you are gifting, to include the wash instructions which are on the label of the yarn you use.

You will need:

  • 5mm hook/H-8
  • Aran/medium worsted weight /10 ply in as many colours as you like. I used 3 colours all by stylecraft. Approximately 900g of yarn.
  • Sharp yarn needle
  • Scissors

Yarns I used:

  • Stylecraft special Aran – cream
  • Stylecraft special Aran – Pale Rose
  • Stylecraft special Aran – Burgundy

I use love crafts and the wool box and you can get 15% off your first order.

The amount of yarn you will need will vary for the size you make. I used 3 balls of each colour for my baby blanket

5mm hook with aran yarn – 4 inches by 4 inches = 15 sc by 12 rows.

If you’re not sure on the stitch abbreviations I have a full printable PDF which you can grab here.

Skill Level: Beginner

Pattern:

Chain a multiple of 3 + 2. The table above shows how many you should chain and then how many rows to complete.

R1: 2 hdc in the second chain from the hook. *Sk 2 chains and put (1 sc, 2 hdc) into the 3rd ch from the hook.* Repeat *to* until the last 3 chains. Sk 2 chains and put 1 sc in the last chain. Chain 1 and turn.

R2-6: Put 2 hdc in the same space as the chain 1. *Sk 2 sts, put (1 sc, 2 hdc) into the 3rd st.* repeat * to * to the end of the row. When you have 2 sts left, sk 1 and put 1 sc in the last st. Chain 1 and turn.

R7-12: Put 2 hdc in the same space as the chain 1. *Sk 2 sts, put (1 sc, 2 hdc) into the 3rd st.* repeat * to * to the end of the row. When you have 2 sts left, sk 1 and put 1 sc in the last st. Chain 1 and turn.

Change colours

R13-18: Put 2 hdc in the same space as the chain 1. *Sk 2 sts, put (1 sc, 2 hdc) into the 3rd st.* repeat * to * to the end of the row. When you have 2 sts left, sk 1 and put 1 sc in the last st. Chain 1 and turn.

Switch back to the first colour and repeat round 2-6.

Continue alternating colours and making 6 rows of each colour until you reach your desired length and fasten off.

If you want to add a boarder then simply put 1 sc in each stitch along the top, work 3 sc’s into each corner and then evenly work sc’s into the sides of the blanket.

This will give it a nice clean, finished look.

Now weave in your ends and you’re done!

If you would prefer the video tutorial I have that too and you can find it here.

Happy hooking!
