Crazy Wavy Tote Bag

Pattern Notes

The bottom of this tote bag is worked flat in rows back and forth.  After the bottom of the bag is worked, the pattern is worked in joined rounds without turning.

Gauge is not important for this project.

You can do the color changes any way that you like, but I hid all of my color changes on the inside of the bag and kept both color A and color B attached for the whole body of the bag.

There is a chain up of 4 to start every other row during the side section of the bag. To make the next color of yarn ready to pick up, I flipped it over before each chain making sure that after I did the fourth chain the yarn would end on the inside of the bag, the video demonstrates this color change.

inside of the bag

This tote bag pattern is split up into 3 different sections: the bottom of the tote bag, the sides of the tote bag, and the handles.

Stitches Used and Abbreviations

Ch- chain

Ss - slip stitch

Sc - single crochet

Dc - double crochet

Tc - treble crochet

Materials

  • 4.5mm crochet hook

  • 2 colors of cotton yarn, color A and color B

    • For color A I used: stonewash Lily’s Sugar and Cream Denim, used approx. 2 skeins or 5 oz

    • For color B I used: white Lily’s Sugar and Cream Cotton, used approx. 1 skein or 2.5 oz

  • Scissors

  • Stitch markers (I use 4-6 to mark off the handles)

  • Yarn needle

Starting with Color A

Tote Bag Bottom
The Bottom of the Tote Bag

Row 1: Ch 12 and sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, sc to the end of the row, for a total of 11 sc stitches.

Row 2-40: ch 1 and turn, sc in each and every stitch with no increases or decreases.

I did a total of 40 rows for the bottom of my tote bag, when you finish all 40 rows, DO NOT CUT THE YARN.

Side of the Tote Bag - I started the row count over for the side of the tote bag

Still Using Color A

Row 1: Ch 1 and we’re going to work our first row of the tote bag in the round.  Working into the nearest long side of the bottom of the tote bag put 1 sc stitch for each row of the bottom, on this side there should be a total of 40 sc stitches.  Then, work 11 sc stitches into the next edge of the bottom of the bag.  Next, work another 40 sc stitches along the next long side and finally 11 sc stitches along the final short side, coming back to where we began our first row in the round.  Ss into the top of the first sc (102).

Row 2: This is our first row that will start the wavy pattern for our tote bag.  Ch 1 and sc into the same stitch, then in the following stitches: hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc.  This is the pattern that will be worked for the entirety of this row, *sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc.*  Repeat from * to * until the end of the round, should be for a total of 17 repeats/peaks in the wave pattern.  Since this is the first row of our wave pattern it is only working what is equivalent to the top half of our wave pattern going forward, I will show you how this changes in the next row.  Ss into the first sc while changing to color B for the first time.

Row 3: Color B - ch 4 and tc into the same stitch and into the following stitches: dc, sc, sc, dc, tc. Then, *tc, dc, sc, sc, dc, tc*. Repeat from * to * for the rest of the row and ss into the top of the first tc stitch from the row.

Row 4: Color A - ch 1 and sc into the same stitch and into the following stitches: dc, tc, tc, dc, sc. Then, *sc, dc, tc, tc, dc, sc*. Repeat from * to * for the rest of the row, ss into the top of the first sc stitch from the row.

About halfway through the tote bag sides

NOTE

From here on out odd numbered rows will be worked in color B and even numbered rows will be worked in color A.

The odd numbered/color B rows will be worked: tc, dc, sc, sc, dc, tc.

The even numbered/color A rows will be worked: sc, dc, tc, tc, dc, sc.

If you ever get lost during the wave pattern repeating rows a sc goes into the tc stitches of the previous round, dc stitches get worked into the dc stitches of the previous round, and tc stitches are worked into the sc stitches of the previous round.

Work the sides of the totebag until row 22.

To finish up the sides of the tote bag, I will be repeating row 2 for the side of the tote bag, but in reverse.  I will walk you through this below.  I decided I wanted to finish off the sides of the tote bag using color B and the handles to be worked in color A.

Row 23: color B - ch 2 and dc into the same stitch.  Into the following stitches: hdc, sc, sc, hdc, dc.  Work the pattern: dc, hdc, sc, sc, hdc, dc until the end of the row, ss into the top of the first dc.

Row 24: color B - ch 1 and sc in every stitch around, at the end of the round ss into the top of the first sc changing to color A.  At this point cut off color B, color A will work the handle section.

Handles

Row 25: color A - ch 1 and sc in every stitch around, at the end of the round ss into the top of the first sc.

Row 26: the beginning of the handles - ch 1, sc in the next 15 stitches, loosely ch 60 stitches skip the next 30 stitches, making sure not to twist the chain sc into the 31st stitch.  Then, sc into the next 20 stitches, loosely ch 60 stitches skip the next 30 stitches, and again making sure not to twist the chain sc into the 31st stitch.  Finally, sc into the final 5 stitches and ss into the top of the first sc stitch of the round (162).

Row 27: ch 1 sc in the next 15 stitches.  Then, sc in each of the ch spaces, 60 sc, before putting a sc in the next 21 stitches after the first handle.  Next, sc in each of the ch spaces, 60 sc, before putting a sc in each of the next 6 stitches after the second handle.  Ss into the top of the first sc.

Row 28-30: ch 1 and sc in each and every stitch around, ss into the top of the first sc.  After row 30 is completed ch 1, pull up, and cut.

Weave in the ends using a yarn needle and cut off excess.

Congratulations on making it to the end of the pattern and your own crazy wavy tote bag!
