This Free Hooded Cowl Crochet Pattern teaches you how to crochet a cowl scarf and how you can easily add a hood to it to make a stylish Hooded Cowl. This is made using the same stitch design as my Riptide Slouch Hat and Scarf.

For this project you will need:
HOOK: A6 mm hook or size J hook for the US
YARN: I used 2 skeins of worsted weight yarn, 4 ply US, 10 ply AU
Each Skein was – 100 grams / 3.5. oz or 240 meters / 262 yards
And at least 2 stitch markers.

To Start:
Ch 80 and sl st in beginning ch to form a ring. Ch 2
Round 1
dc in next stitch and in all sts around, sl st in beginning st. Ch 2 (80 sts)
Round 2
BPDC on following post (not on the Ch 2) and continue to BPDC on all post of round. Sl st into beg ch. Ch 2
Rounds 3 – 15 (13 rounds – 15 rounds total)
Repeat rounds 1 & 2
Round 16
dc in all sts, sl st to beginning, Ch 1 , cut yarn. Your piece should look like this facing the back.
MAKING THE HOOD
Place a stitch marker here if you like. Including the stitch your holding as 1, count over 15 stitches total. Place marker. Then not counting the middle stitch, count over 15 to the left. Place a marker here. You should have 30 sts from marker to marker. This will be the opening part of the hood.
Using the line on the back, try to straighten it in the middle as much as you can and then find the middle stitch on the front side.
Row 1 of Hood
Grab your yarn again and flip your work where your facing the front of the cowl. Attach your yarn to the left marker.
DC until your next marker. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 2 of Hood
We will be doing FPDC’s this row. FPDC onto the post of the ch 2, and then FPDC onto all post of this row. When you reach then end, ch 2 and turn.
Row 3
Since the ch 2 counts as a stitch, dc into the second stitch and in rest of sts. IMPORTANT to not dc into last dc of row or you will be adding a stitch. Because the ch 2 and the FPDC from last row are counted as 1 st. So ignore the ch 2 at the end of a DC row, just dc in last st and Ch 2 and turn.
Row 4
FPDC onto the post of the ch 2, and then FPDC onto all post of this row. When you reach then end, ch 2 and turn.
Rows 5 – 18 (14 rounds – 18 rounds total)
Repeat rows 3 & 4. Row 18 should be a FPDC row. It’s important to end on a FPDC and not a DC row. The pictures below first show you the FRONT then the BACK.
The last row worked, you want to fold that row in half, where last stitch of row touches the first st of the row. Fold it where the good side / right side / textured side is on the inside like shown below.
Then sl stitch, loosely, don’t pull the stitches tight, you want your sts to remain even and flat as much as you can.
When your reach the last stitch, ch 1 and cut your yarn, work in end.
Now you can see your hood formed!
Now find the first row of your hood on both side and place a marker
Attach your yarn again and working in the side stitches, you want to put one sc on the post of the dc’s along the side
When you come up to a dc & ch 2 spot, treat it as one post and sc over them both together. When you reach the end, ch 1 and turn.
Now we will be doing a puff stitch. Which is YO, insert hook into stitch, repeat 2 more times, 7 loops on hook. Pull through all 7 loops and ch 1. sc into next stitch. Repeat until end of row.
