You can alternate colors at will to make your own design, or follow the yarn changings in the pattern
Hook size is changed for the strap of the tote to make for a sturdier, stronger handle that won’t stretch as much
Make the strap as long or as short as you want depending on how you plan on wearing the tote.

Sl St BACKWARDS 4 sts. SC forward 4 Sts, DC 4 sts, Ch 1, turn work. Change Hook to F.
Row 1: 7 SC, Ch 1, turn
Repeat row 1 until the desired length of the strap is achieved. Then FO leaving an 8-10 inch tail. Using the upholstery needle, sew the strap down to the exact opposite side of the bag than where the strap started. Weave in all ends.
Measure the width of your bag. Multiply this number by 2 and then add 2-3 inches to the length. Using matching color yarn and F hook, make a CH that length, FO. Using the upholstery needle, weave this CH in and out of the DC SPs on the last round of the bag, making ends cross by weaving one to two SPs past the starting point . Tie a knot in the very end of the CH on both ends, to keep ends from slipping out of the SP. Do not trim ends from ends of CH.
Fold small piece of cardboard in half. Using different color yarn from the drawstring, loosely wrap yarn around folded part of cardboard about 10-12 times. Using same color yarn as the drawstring, insert yarn under the yarn by the crease in the cardboard. Tie yarn in a knot. Use scissors to cut the yarn along the opening of the cardboard. One tassel made!! Repeat process to make another one.
Using the yarn that ties the tassel together, tie the tassel to the drawstring. Tie it in a knot behind the knot at the end of the drawstring. Trim the tassels to all one length including the ends of the drawstring CH and the yarn used to tie the tassel together.
Turn the bag inside out and, using the upholstery needle and the second color of yarn, whip stitch the bag together along the bottom. You are now finished!!!!
