Dawn in the Woods Shawl

Difficulty level: *** Intermediate

Free Shawl Crochet Pattern

Dawn in the Woods is a fun, scarf-like shawl featuring an eye-catching pineapple crochet border.

The basic shape of this shawl is a long, flat triangle, which means that the shawl can be wrapped or draped just like a scarf. The shawl is worked sideways, starting at one narrow end of the triangle, getting wider towards the middle and then narrowing again on the other side.

The body of the shawl is made up of V-stitches and is quite straightforward to work, as long as you mind the increases and decreases. The shawl's border is the real challenge in this project, and is actually pineapple crochet!

As many projects, this shawl started with a yarn. In my stash, I had a Kauni (affiliate link) fingering-weight yarn featuring long color transitions of pink, white and coffee. Every time I saw it, the color combination reminded me of a bright, pink dawn on a snowy winter day. Here in the Northeast, we get plenty of those! I wanted to create a shawl that would work with the yarn to enhance this atmosphere.

That said, this shawl can be made with almost any color or weight of yarn, including lace, sport, DK or even worsted-weight, as long as you use the appropriate hook. You may also wish to adjust the size of the shawl accordingly. This is easy to do, by just repeating rows 11-24 of the pattern more or less times. Just remember that increases in the first half of the shawl need to be followed by corresponding decreases in the second half!

For this type of pattern in particular, I think it's very useful to have a diagram, and so I included one. Hopefully, it is helpful!

I love your pattern so much, but I wanted to ask you what is your policy on selling finished products? Do you want simple recognition, is the pattern only for personal use, etc. Thank you!

This turned out beautifully, but I did have some difficulty with the rows. I definitely did not end on row 12 with three V-stitches. I ended with row 21 I believe and then I just repeated the 3 V-stitches until I reached row 12.

Do you have any tips on blocking this?

I love the pattern but I too have not been able to figure out the decreasing. It doesn't look right. A diagram like the others would probably help a lot of us. PLEASE!!!!!

You'll find the decreases in the chart 2 (end of shawl). The right side of the chart shows the decreases.
