Shades of Grey Slouch

Okay.... I have a dirty little secret. I am FREAKING OUT about the Fifty Shades of Grey movie! (You are not allowed to judge me!) So in celebration, I designed this hat yesterday and finished it yesterday. I am a big fan of secretly being a big fan. I like crocheting things that silently show my passions. So here it is! The Shades of Grey Slouch!

I found this cute little stitch and once I began crocheting it, i discovered it was more of a weaving technique than a real stitch. The stitch is known as the "woven overlay stitch" but I wrote the pattern in dcs and chains to make things simpler.

Hook: H-5.00mm
Yarn: worsted weight
-Red Heart "Heather"
-Caron in "Heather"
- Red Heart in "Cherry Red"
Gauge: two rows of woven overlay stitch = 1 inch
Adjustable: just fdsc an even number for your brim

Abbreviations:
ch - chain
fdsc - foundation single crochet
dc - double crochet
slst - slip stitch
hdc - half double crochet
blo - back loop only

1) fdsc 66 , slst to first fdsc

2) ch 4, sk fdsc, *dc in st, ch 1, sk fdsc* repeat around join with a slst

3) ch 4, sk ch, *dc in previous dc, ch 1* repeat around, join

4-12) repeat row #3

13 - 14) ch 3, *dc in each dc* repeat around, join

15) flip hat inside out, ch 1, slst across, FO leaving a tail the length of the top of the hat.

-1) join yarn to brim, ch 1, *hdc* repeat around, DO NOT JOIN

-2 & -3) ch 1, hdc in blo, around

-4) slst blo around, decrease as needed to increase tightness, FO.
 Weave in all ends

Scrunching:
Now you are going to "scrunch" the top part of your hat. "Scrunching" the top of your hat gives a less boxy shape and more of an oval one.
Flip the hat inside out. Take your long tail and pull it through the loops of one of your middle slsts then pull it through the first slst. Pull the string as tight as you please (it doesn't have to be really tight) and then tie it to the beginning of the tail. Heres a picture if you are confused.

Weaving:
Each strand is tied through the loops of the fdsc with the kind of loop shown.

(Each strand is actually 2 strands using the larks head knot.)

The chart is color coded to simplify weaving but only 2 colors are used: red and light grey.

Flip inside out and tie knots to the chains of the last row.

The pattern is really very simple, I just sometimes seem to make things sound difficult. Feel free to ask questions! My brain is a weird messed up place and if something doesn't make sense, call me on it!

I was asked how this is Fifty Shades of Grey. To me the grey strands of the hat represent the perceived "straight and narrow" while the red represents how strange a different lifestyle may be. That's what this hat means to me. How about you?
