For this project you’ll need:
HOOK: 5 mm hook or size H hook for the US
YARN: 1 skein of worsted weight yarn, 4 ply US, 10 ply AU
100 grams / 3.5. oz
240 meters / 262 yards

ch = Chain
SC = Single Crochet
Special Stitch: Granny Tear: YO into the 1st stitch and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops leaving 2 loops on your hook, YO and go through next st and pull up a loop, pull through only 2 loops, leaving 3 loops on your hook, YO and go in through next st and pull up a loop, go in through 2 loops, now you have 4 loops on your hook, now YO and go through all 4 loops, ch 2.

The Multiples
The multiples of this stitch is 3
To Start
Ch 3 and sl st into beginning ch to form a ring.
Round 1
Ch 2 and DC 11 into center of ring. Sl st in top of beginning ch 2 to end the round. (12 sts)
Round 2
Ch 2 & DC into same stitch. DC 2 into all sts around. sl st in top of beginning ch 2 to end the round. (24 sts)
Round 3
Ch 2, * DC 2 into next st, DC into next st, * sl st in top of beginning ch 2 to end the round. (36 sts) Stop increasing for size Baby (3 – 12 months) Continue on to stitch portion of the hat.
Round 4
Ch 2, DC 1 into next st, * DC 2 into next st, DC into next two sts * sl st in top of beginning ch 2 to end the round. (48 sts) Stop increasing for size Toddler \ Child Continue on to stitch portion of the hat.
Round 5
Ch 2 * DC 1 into next two sts, DC 2 into next st, DC 1 into next three sts * sl st in top of beginning ch 2 to end the round. (60 sts) final increase row for Teen \ Adult size
STITCH SECTION OF PATTERN
No matter what size your making, you will complete 6 full rows of Granny tears.
Round 6
Ch 1 and work your first Granny Tear using the same space as you slip stitched into, and continue the stitch using the next 2 stitches as explained above in Special Stitch. Work your Granny tears all the way around. The last granny tear of the round, only ch 1 and sl st into top of cluster. The sl st counts as the second ch.
Round 7
ch 1 and now working in the large spaces, do a Granny Tear there. Once you pull through all 4 loops and ch 2, you move to the next big space and repeat as shown above. Continue this until you’ve completed your last big space of the round. Sl st in top of beginning cluster.
Rounds 8 – 11
Repeat row 7 for 4 more rounds.
THE RIM of the Hat
Baby (3 – 12 months)
Round 1 MARK YOUR BEGINNING ST
Ch 1 and do * 2 sc’s into the big stitch. Work 1 single crochet into the next 2 sts. * Repeat for the round.
Count your stitches! (If you are like me, you have 44 sts. This row you need to start working on getting your sts back to 36. So we need to make 8 decreases, or however many it takes you to get back to 36 sts.)
Round 2
* sc 4, sc dec * repeat for row. (36 sts)
Round 3
*sc in all sts * Sl st in beg st and ch 1 & cut your yarn. Hide your tail.
Toddler \ Child
Round 1 MARK YOUR BEGINNING ST
Ch 1 and do * 2 sc’s into the big stitch. Work 1 single crochet into the next 2 sts. * Repeat for the round.
If you are like me, you have 61 sts. This row you need to start working on getting your sts back to 48. So we need to make 13 decreases, or however many it takes you to get back to 48 sts.
Round 2
* sc 4, sc dec * repeat for row.
Round 3
*sc 4, sc dec * 3 times bringing you to 48 sts, then sc the rest of the row. Sl st in beg st and ch 1 & cut your yarn. Hide your tail.
Teen \ Adult
Round 1 MARK YOUR BEGINNING ST
Ch 1 and do * 2 sc’s into the big stitch. Work 1 single crochet into the next 2 sts. * Repeat for the round.
If you are like me, you have 73 sts. This row you need to start working on getting your sts back to 60. So we need to make 13 decreases, or however many it takes you to get back to 60 sts.
Round 2
* sc 6, sc dec * repeat for row. (63 sts)
Round 3
* sc 6, sc dec * 3 times bringing you to 60 sts, then sc the rest of the row. Sl st in beg st and ch 1 & cut your yarn. Hide your tail.
