Crochet baby booties in 15 minutes or less!

Crochet Baby Booties by Croby Patterns

Hope you are all doing well. I am so happy to share with you a new pattern for baby booties this week. And it’s a very special one! You ask why? Because it’s super easy to follow and baby booties are made using this particular pattern in no time. πŸ™‚ Β I would say, with a little bit of practice, 15 minutes max. πŸ™‚

So if you are in a hurry to attend a babyΒ shower andΒ you need a gift, this might be a perfect solution for you. Even if there is no hurry, once you will tryΒ this pattern, you will see how awesome it is and you will use it all the time.

Watch the video and follow the step by step tutorial to learn how to make this simple crochet baby booties from start to finish. Don’t forget to jump to my YouTube channel and subscribe (HERE!) if you haven’t already. Once you are there turn on the post notification (little bell next to the subscribe button) so you will be first to know when I post something new. It’s free! πŸ™‚

Here is what you will need for this project (These links are affiliate links. Purchasing through this links earns me a small commission with no extra cost to you. So if you decide to purchase through them, know that you are awesome! Thanks! πŸ™‚)

  • YARN: This pattern is made with Drops Eskimo mix yarn which is 100% wool yarn in shade pastel blue (31), which is gorgeous light blue color. (HERE!)Β Update: Recently I came across Super Chunky weight yarn from Paintbox. (HERE!) The yarn is 50% wool and 50% acrylic and is way softer and more gentle on the skin then Drops Eskimo which makes it perfect for baby items. Also, the yarn is available in 60 different shades and the closest to the one I am using in this tutorial is Duck Egg Ble (935).
  • CROCHET HOOK: You will need 7.0 mm crochet hook. Sadly there is no US hook size for this crochet hook, so you will have to go one size down which would be K/10 1/2 or L/11. (You can find something similarΒ to what I am using HERE!)
  • OTHER: And of course a yarn needle (HERE!), stitch markers (HERE!), a pair of scissors (HERE!) and around 3 cm in a diameter big button (HERE!).

The instructions are using simple crochet stitches that are because of their long names written as abbreviated words/signs. If there is a stitch or technique that you’re not familiar with, don’t worry. Click on the video next to the stitch name and you can learn how to do it right away.

  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • ch – chain (VIDEO)
  • sc – single crochet (VIDEO)
  • sc2tog – single crochet two together
  • ss – slip stitch
  • hdc – half double crochet (VIDEO)
  • hdc2tog – half double crochet two together
  • dc – double crochet (VIDEO)
  • dc2tog – double crochet two together
  • BLO – work into back loops only

  • The pattern is worked in rounds.
  • How to read a pattern:
    • If the number is written before the stitch 3 hdc work 3 hdc into the same stitch. If the number is written after the stitch hdc 3, work hdc into next 3 stitches.
    • Repeat what is written in the () as many times as it’s written right after the (). For an example: Repeat (2 hdc, hdc 1) 5 times. It means that you have to repeat the sequence work 2 hdc sts into the same st, 1 hdc into the next one 5 times. And you will get 5 additional stitches by doing that.
  • The chain at the beginning of the round/row does not count as a stitch unless otherwise stated in the pattern. The chain is just a way to give us to the proper height. The number of the chains at the beginning of the round/row matches the hight of the first stitch.
  • Use stitch markers to mark your first stitch of each round/row.
  • Skill level: Easy
  • Gauge: 6 sts and 3.5 rows in HDC to measure 5 x 5 cm or (2 x 2 inches).
  • Size: 0 – 3 months.

How can I begin to Thank You? My first granddaughter from my youngest daughter just sent a text to let me know her contractions had just begun. We’ll see how true her statement is. So excited for them!

Thank you for sharing this pattern Doroteja. It’s brilliant! Please could I ask, if I wanted to increase the size, would I just add a couple of stitches to the original hdc3 in the sole? Thank you!

hi, what if i want a bigger size… how should i increase the stitch? any reference?

Reply
Doroteja May 4, 2016 - 14:03

First of, you have to start with a longer base chain on the sole. So instead of chain 6, try ch 7 or 8. And because you have a longer chain, you have to add 2 additional stitches into each round of the sole and upper part. For example; round 1(sole) instead of Hdc 3, work hdc 4 or 5. πŸ™‚

I love this pattern!! I am trying to make it bigger. I ended up chaining 10 and I increased the hdc 3 to 8. I have done up to round 3 and I am not sure how to increase round 4 accordingly.. any advice?

Hey!
I live in usa and cannot find drop eskimo yarn. Do you have any other yarn options that would be good in this pattern? thank you!!

I live in Europe and I buy all the yarn here. Here is the link with the yarn specifications of Drops Eskimo yarn that I am using. Hope it helps! πŸ™‚ Also, I think this online store ship worldwide. http://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/yarn/drops-eskimo-all-colours

Thank you so much for sharing this pattern and for the brilliant tutorial. I have managed to make one pair and I’m just about to start another. To increase the size of the booties I just used a bigger crochet hook and it worked out fine using your pattern. You are very talented and I hope to learn alot more by following your tutorials.

This is a great tutorial. I’m a mostly self-taught crocheter who experiments until I pick something up (so, in other words, I’m usually just winging it). This video was very well done, and I think I’ll have the hang of making these in no time. Can’t wait to go get some new yarn. Thank you.

Hi! I’m new to crochet and I’ve been seeing this video a lot of times lately. Finally I mastered my booties yesterday! They’re gorgeous but too small for my baby. I’m going to try again today adding 3 chains to the base of the sole. Thanks for sharing!

what is a good replacement yarn in the lion brand for the yarn you used? i tried the #6 super bulky in the lion brand but it seemed too thick. =( im a beginner. how do I compare the yarns? thanks.

Reply
Doroteja September 27, 2017 - 13:31

Hi, Jane!
This pattern is made with Drops Eskimo yarn http://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/yarn/drops-eskimo-all-colours
It’s very hard to say because I do not use thick yarn so often, I usually buy cotton yarns in Aran (or Worsted) and DK (Light Worsted) weight. I switch between three of four yarn brands and mostly use those yarns for creating my patterns. πŸ™‚

Gabrielle October 9, 2017 - 08:49

I will admit, I’m a super beginner. But, I have attempted this three times and each time I’ve ended up with a wonky bowl that doesn’t barely resemble a baby bootie :(. What am I doing wrong? I’m trying to follow along with the video, and the bottom of the bootie turns out perfect, but for some reason mine is a big bowl and isn’t shoe shaped at all! :c

Try with a smaller crochet hook. Maybe your stitches are too loose. πŸ™‚

Hi Mary!
Hi would recommend you to go one size up with your crochet hook, so instead of using 7.0 mm, maybe use 8.0 mm crochet hook. πŸ™‚ The entire baby booties will come out bigger. πŸ™‚ Happy crocheting! πŸ™‚

Thank you for making it clear about the placement of the number in the stitch & what it means! I have seen so many patterns that do not have clear directions at all. I will be several rows or rounds into a project & have to frog it or adjust the rest of the pattern because the directions don’t make any sense.

Just made these for my Grandaughters Babydolls for Christmas. I just love them. Very easy pattern I just used a smaller hook and they are perfect for their doll babies. A tad big but will be easy for them to put on and take off all by themselves. Thanks! If you have any babydoll booty patterns I would love to see try them for their baby dolls.

Way to cute, I used a extra soft yarn for needle 6-7 and I used 7. Came out perfect. I added a ribbon on top instead of a button, I did it for practical reasons, to make it stay on better. But totally different vibe, super cute. I am gifting it now to all my friends with babies or who are expecting. Each a different detail. And of course, make a pair for my second baby, because this are the first shoes who will be NO trouble putting on and actually keep the little feet warm <3 thank you so much!!

You can, you will have to make way less rows and stitches in each row to achieve the same size of the hat. πŸ™‚

Thank you for this pattern, it’s that simple to follow even I can do it!! I’ve been looking for a simple booties pattern for ages! I have just one Q, I have read the advice on increasing the size and understand it in the first few rounds, but when you start to decrease in rd 4, where should I be changing the pattern there please? X do I do a few more dctog? Or sc?

Reply
Doroteja April 18, 2018 - 16:46

Hi! I would do a combination of both. πŸ™‚ Let’s say you have 4 sts more than I had in the pattern; use 2 for sc sts (one on each side) and two for dc2tog. πŸ™‚

Hello. I’m trying booties for the first time. On round four is where I run into a problem. The repeat dc2tog 6 times through the end of the directions for round four does not equal 20 stitches. It’s way more. I’m missing some part of the directions. I printed out the directions so I could make notes. This helps me. What am I doing wrong?

Reply
Doroteja February 4, 2020 - 09:58

Hi Wendy! I checked the stitch count of round 4 and it’s correct. Let me explain. From working six dc2tog stitches you get 6 stitches because those stitches are decreases, you are joining two and two together. So, 5 sc + 2 hdc + 6 dc2tog + 2 hdc + 5 sc = 20 sts. What usually happens is, that crocheters use a stitch that was used in a previous decrease in a new one or they use slip stitch at the end of the round as a stitch. Both cases result in additional stitches.

Hi there!!
LOVE this pattern. Wondering if you could write one out for 3 to 6 months, 6 to 9 months and 9 months to 12 months? I know you say to increase each row, but not everyone is good with just being told to increase, hahaha. I need something written out for my brain to understand.
