I really do love baby dresses. They’re quick to make and always so adorable.

Technique: Regular Crochet
Finished Size
The dress, immediately after stitching, is approximately size 3-6 months. Once I gave it a water bath for light blocking, it grew to about size 12 months. It may even be able to used as a top for a toddler. It’s always about the baby’s actual size and never about the number of months on the earth.
If you were to use an acrylic of the same weight, it wouldn’t block out, so you could expect a size 3-6 months, however, you need to be aware of what happens with non-man-made fibers and this is a perfect example.
This dress is very easy to adjust in size simply by using a slightly heavier yarn and larger hook to accommodate the yarn. Even the same weight yarn (light fingering) and the next hook size up will give you a slight size adjustment for approximately 9 months or so.
Due to it being difficult to measure gauge and the differences in non-man-made fibers, you may not get exactly the size you want on the first go and you may need to try again.
Use Yarn Standards for typical baby measurements. The most crucial part of this dress is the neck. It currently stretches to 20″ which is minimum, according to the garment industry. Keep an eye on your neck measurement.
Marie of Crochetine made this fantastic project from the Tulip Chevrons pattern. Her daughter is so adorable. I so love it when someone sees one of my new patterns and they crochet it up right away. Seeing this photo from Marie just makes me want to do more and more baby dresses!
Marie chose a slightly heavier weight yarn and a 4.5mm hook to create this preschool age size for her daughter. She had the very clever idea to add some shoulder straps for a different look. The pattern works wonderfully with experimentation to get different sizes.

Gauge
It’s nearly impossible to determine gauge on a garment like this and even more impossible to swatch for it. Let your project itself become your swatch.
Before blocking, neck stretches to 20″ around, armhole to armhole is about 8.5″, armhole height is approximately 3.5-4″.

Block as desired and weave in all ends.
Notes on Blocking
If you’re going to use non-man-made fibers, you’re going to want to give your project a water bath. Even if you use acrylic, it doesn’t hurt to give your project a water bath to open up the lace a bit. I don’t ever do any heavy blocking. I just wet the project and then placed it flat on a clean towel, adjusting it and flattening out or stretching out the lace so that it’s not all bunched up. Then, I just let it dry.
