Mandala Rug
Crochet Pattern
Intermediate Skill Level
Designed by Jessie Rayot

This stunning rug uses front and back post stitches to create an eye-catching mandala. The texture not only creates the beautiful pattern in the rug, but also makes it soft and squishy under foot. There are no cable stitches used, just regular post stitches and increases and decreases. This pattern is an intermediate pattern and requires a bit of attention to make. Trust me, it’s worth the effort! You can even make it in different weight yarns to change the size and make a wall hanging or pillow cover!

Size:
31″ diameter

Yarn:
Berroco Vintage Chunky – 750g or 8 skeins

Hook/Needles:
US-J/10, 6.00mm

Gauge:
12 sts x 7 rows = 4” [10 cm] in dc

Other supplies:
yarn needle

Stitches and Abbreviations:
ch ~ chain
bpdc ~ back post double crochet
dc ~ double crochet
fpdc ~ front post double crochet
hdc ~ half double crochet
sl st ~ slip stitch
sp(s) ~ space(s)
st(s) ~ stitch(es)

Special Stitches:
BPdc2tog: Yo, insert around post of designated st from back to front to back again, yo, pull through the st only (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo, insert around post of next st from back to front to back again, yo, pull through the st only (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 3 loops. Back post double crochet 2 together made.
FPdc2tog: Yo, insert around post of designated st from front to back to front again, yo, pull through the st only (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo, insert around post of next st from front to back to front again, yo, pull through the st only (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 3 loops. Front post double crochet 2 together made.

Getting Started:
This rug will appear to not lay flat until it has been blocked. The post stitches create a ribbing effect that tends to pull the rug to a bump in the middle. Be sure to block the rung when you are done making it. The sample was blocked by soaking for a few minutes in Fibre Rinse, then squeezing out the water (do not wring) and laying it flat to dry.

  1. Wow! It looks really great… I think I’ll give it a try as I was thinking to crochet one for my bedroom. Wish I had another couple of hands 😉 Thank you so much for sharing, Jessie.

P.S.: Promise I’m going to show it to you, whenever I finish the job, though!!!

      • Hey Jessie awesome rug I am having trouble starting row 11 I can’t figure out how to end the row with 96 stitches as the start confuses me on how many I am meant to create before repeating. Thanks

        Reply
        • There is 1 stitch before the repeats (fpdc) than 11 sts after the repeats [(hdc, BPdc) in next sts, (2hdc BPdc) in next st, (hdc, FPdc) in next st, FPdc in next st, BPdc2tog, BPdc2tog, FPdc in last st].

    • I am on the other side of the country right now. When I get home I will check the round with the actual rug and fix any errors at the beginning of the week.

        • I’ve double checked round 19 with the rug in my hands and the stitches are all correct as written. All I can think is you are counting them differently then I did. Just make them as written and it should work.

  4. I noticed there are two round 31: instructions.
I am guessing that it was a numbering oops… thus the second 31 would be 32 and there would be a total of 41 rounds rather than 40…

  5. Hi, I actually had to pay for your pattern ($2) and have been repeatedly flogging at rows 9-10. The count for R9 is correct but when I do R10 I end up with over 100 stitches. I’ve tried going back (frogging) to beginning R8 & redoing but every time I get the same results. PLEASE tell me how it’s supposed to look at this point or how many stitches I should have at the end of each row. I’m making this for my granddaughter & it’s already been a week as I get flustered when it comes out wrong. Thanks in advance!!

    • There are no increases in round 10. Any row that does not have a st count is that way because the st count has not changed from the previous round.

  6. I am loving this pattern so much! I’m nearly done with it (currently on row 36). I’m making it as a house warming gift for a friend. I have a question, if I wanted to make it larger, how would you suggest I do so? Also, what exactly does blocking mean?

    • Each row required a lot of thought, so there is not really a way I can tell you to make it bigger without spending the time to design new rounds, sorry. You can always improvise.

Blocking is shaping the finished item. You can google it and find a lot of tutorials. I just steam blocked my rug by laying it upside down and steaming over it then patting it into shape.

      • Thanks so much for replying promptly. I appreciate it! I will improvise a little and see how it comes out. Thanks again!

  7. I love this pattern and working hard to follow the instructions. I am having a problem between rows 12 and 13. At the end of row 13 there should be 112 stitches. When I use math to add and subtract stitches and when I count my stitches, I have 120. I have done and redone this several times and am about to wear out my yarn! Please help

    Thank you…

      • this is a beautiful pattern. but what a snippy response. why not just fix the instructions. I have the same count as Joyce.
anywho, thanks for working so hard creating and sharing the pattern.

        • It was not my intent to be snippy, sorry if you read it that way. At the time, I was out of town and did not have the time to check and edit the pattern. Joyce is correct though, so I did fix it.

  8. Thank you for the pattern! I just finished a rug using your pattern and I love it. In place of bpdc I used hdc bc I had a limited amount of yarn. Thank you so much for sharing, this pattern is brilliant. You are very talented!

    • Round 17 ends with 18 stitches in each repeat, and Round 18 has 18 sts in each repeat, so I don’t know what’s wrong. Do you have the right number of sts in Round 17?

  9. This pattern is so much fun to crochet! I am doing it in one of Red Heart’s gemstone yarns (citrine) and it is turning out great. I have high hopes for the blocking process because, as warned, it is looking like a beanie at the moment (on row 13 now). But if it turns out well I think I will make another for the atrium. This one will be for the foyer. Thank you so much for offering this pattern free, but I feel I really should buy something from you to compensate you for the great effort you have put into this design. Where can I find patterns you are selling?

    • Thank you! I have mine in my studio, and it’s nice and flat now that it’s been blocked. It’s also been washed a few times.
I do actually get paid by my advertisers when you are on my site, so if you use my pattern straight from my site, I’m getting paid. That way you get a free pattern, and I still get paid. Pretty cool, right?
There are linked little buttons at the top right of my site, and you can find my Ravelry and Etsy pages there. There you can find PDFs for my free-on-the-internet patterns for a small fee – they are formatted to be easy to print and read. There are also patterns that are only available in PDFs there for a bit more. In addition, there is an Amazon search button in the sidebar of my site. If you use that to get to Amazon, you will still pay all the same prices, but when you buy something, Amazon pays me a small amount for advertising. Plus, the supplies linked in my patterns and at the bottom of my patterns are usually affiliate links (I get paid a small advertising fee, but you still pay the same amount) as well. So there are several ways you can pay me. Thank you so much for asking.
Please feel free to join my Facebook group linked at the bottom of my patterns if you’re on Facebook. Then you can share pictures of your work (even if it’s not from one of my patterns) and ask questions or just chat with other crafty people.
