Crochet wrist warmers

These cozy wrist warmers are super easy to crochet. They only consist of rows of single crochet (US terms). To make them a little more special they are decorated with cross stitches.

The cross stitch decoration makes the wrist warmers easy to vary even though the crochet part is so easy. Perfect :)

MATERIAL

Yarn: I have used Alpacka Solo (100 % alpaca). For people living outside the nordic countries I would recommend Drops Alpaca which is very similar to the yarn I have used.
I have used 1 skein of the base color for the crocheted part and very small amounts of the colors for the cross stitches.

Hook: 3,0 mm

Scissors and a needle for cross stitches and to fasten ends.

ABBREVIATIONS, US CROCHET TERMS

st - stitch

sl st - slip stitch

ch - chain

sc - single crochet

SIZE

The description below is written from the size of my hands, which are pretty small. The size of the wrist warmers is very easy to change though. Measure if the starting chain is long enough by holding it along your wrist.

Add or remove chains if needed. You then need to add/remove as many sc's on each rowas you added/removed chains from your starting chain. Eventually you will need to add some extra rows to make the wrist warmer go around your hand.

DESCRIPTION

Start by making 51 ch.  Do not crochet to tight on the starting chain.

Row 1:
Start in 2:nd ch from hook. Make 1 sc in each ch (= 50 sc), turn your work around.

Row 2 - 56:
Ch 1. Make 1 sc in each sc from previous row (= 50 sc), turn your work around.

Test to wrap your work around your hand to see if it is big enough. If not, add some more rows.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

You now have a crochet rectangle. Before we join the sides of the rectangle we will decorate it with cross stitches.


Decoration with cross stitches

When you make rows with single crochet there will be a grid which can be used for cross stitching. It can be a bit tricky in the start before you find where to put the stitches but hang in there and the result will be very pretty.

I've used the pattern below for my cross stitches to make a decorative pattern around the wrist warmer.

Start in the corner a couple of rows from the edge. Work the cross stitches in rows, back and fourth one color at a time.

Crochet edges together

Fold the rectangle in half with the wrong side out. Mark a hole for your thumb before crocheting the edges together. My hole is 12 stitches wide. 

Crochet the sides together with sc's  (the joining will then not be as stiff as with sl st's) through the st's of both sides.  When you reach the thumb hole you crochet along one side only over the hole. Crochet the last part together the same way as before the thumb hole.

Fasten off and weave in ends! Your wrist warmer is finished! Now you only need to make one more :)
